Young illegals from Mexico can be turned right around and sent back to Mexico. No problem there. There has been no surge in Mexicans. The ones from central America cannot, because of a law passed with bipartisan support and signed by George Bush. If what is happening on the border this year was the result of a misunderstanding of Obama’s “Dream Act” proposals for children brought here before the age of consent, then Mexican kids would be just as likely to come. So all the crap about this being the fault of Obama’s rhetoric is just that, crap. All congress has to do is change TFPRA of 2008. Funny, you don’t hear about them trying to do that. At the very least they could authorize the money necessary to humanely and decently process and provide for these children until they can be returned, rather than turn them loose at the mercy of predators. It is insane to say, on the one hand, these kids have to go; and on the other hand, prevent the authorities from holding them anywhere until they can be. Our borders were open to all from 1776 to 1882, and open to nearly all from 1882 to 1917. Nobody wants to go back to the “small government” of those ancient days. And now we so much love the liberty Americans enjoy that we don’t want to share it with anybody else. God forbid that people should be permitted to leave the hellholes into which, by God’s grace, they were born, and find a better life elsewhere! It doesn’t matter that these people are not essentially different from our own immigrant forebears: when great-grand-daddy came a hundred years ago, the rules were different. Nowadays anyone who can’t jump through all the requisite hoops is a criminal! Anyway, the only they need to come here legally is enough money. We never refuse visas to virtuous rich people. True, there are many people who so want to BE US that they are even willing to risk their lives and even … ooo … break the laws to get here. Why aren’t the libertarians singing their praises for asserting their freedom in the face of the big bad government? Yahoos who break the law are defended and praised, why not these courageous would-be Americans? The hypocrisy is sickening. The world today is full of people on the move, refugees fleeing conditions we can’t imagine. We can’t save them all. We are like people in a lifeboat beating off those still in the water so they won’t swamp the boat and drown us all. Okay, so we can’t throw open the doors and say “come one, come all” as the founding fathers did. At least we can acknowledge that these people are refugees fleeing violence and poverty, and not demonize them, acknowledge that the recent crop are, after all, children: if anyone can still be called a child who has gone through what they have gone through. Some of them are bad apples, undoubtedly. But judging any large group of people by the worst among them is a pretty good definition of bigotry.

Think about it. Set voting registration at the border and Democrats will have the illegal vote as well as the dead vote and multiple votes.

Provide for the children? How horribly un-American! Why, even if a proven America-lover like Glenn Beck contemplates something so awful, he gets an earful of threat-filled hate mail from his former fans for daring to suggest such a thing.

Women and children first! That’s the order in which good Americans like to harass immigrants at our borders. If they were any good, they’d have flown here… right, patriots??

Well said, Doughfoot. Better than the herd of corporate lackey “pundits” on the MSM. I was reminded of Rod MacDonald’s Sanctuary while I read your comment.

Fully agree with ending the War on Some Drugs. Billions of dollars and thousands of lives wasted for someone’s ill-conceived idea of morality.

Back in 1946 Emory Reves, a friend of Churchill’s, published a book called The Anatomy of Peace. He postulated that peace is not the absence of war, but the presence of law. People live in peace with one another when they live under a common system of laws. As long as different groups of people live under different law, acknowledging no common authority, they will conflict with one another. The price of absolute national sovereignty is war. Global peace will come with global government, and not before. If you insist on national sovereignty, you insist on neverending war, don’t fool yourself into thinking otherwise. One of the chief functions of a global government, said Reves, was to protect the human rights of ever single person on the planet. And one of the individual rights he thought most absolutely necessary was the right of every human being to go and to live wherever he wants to, and is able to. Imagine if we regarded the right to move to any place on the planet, limited only by our ability to get there, as a basic human right? I don’t know that I agree with all that Reves said, but it is a very persuasive book, and I would recommend it. Even if it is 70 years old.

“I understand that most of the illegal children are from Canada (hoping to get good, American health care instead of the Canadian healthcare which has longqueues and death panels),"

Death panels in Canada! Well; being a Canadian, that’s news to me.

It’s interesting that you bring up Ellis Island, as it did not allow unaccompanied minors to enter the United States:-http://www.nationalreview.com/campaign-spot/382389/ellis-island-did-not-accept-unattended-children-jim-geraghty
