    In 1940 saboteurs cut the elevator cables to keep Hitler from using them. In Edward Rutherfurd’s novel Paris they were led by an old ironworker who had helped build it (kind of a pet of Eiffel’s ever since they had built the framework for the Statue of Liberty).
