Been bitten by horeseflies. They do have those parts, and the bite can hurt. Kinda takes all the guilt out of squishing them; live and let live only goes so far. It doesn’t unbite you, but the squish is the ultimate revenge.
The only good things about horse (or stable) flies is that they are not stealthy: you can hear them coming and they are slower and less agile than the common housefly which means you can often get them before they get you.
Aint many horseflies in our area since the horses were replaced with tractors! To get even, some boys would pull their head part way off, just leaving it dangling by a few cords, and throw it up in the air.Darn thing would fly until it hit something!Another trick was to jam a chicken feather up it’s rear and turn it loose. It could still fly, but the aerodynamics of the feather left it zig-zagging around!
Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes are playing outside when Calvin stumbles upon his mother working in the garage. Hobbes spies a giant flying bug on Calvin’s mom’s head so Calvin runs in the house to hide under the bed.
House flies, horse flies, biting flies, deer flies; I don’t really care. I hate all flies!.And mosquitos; I hate mosquitos!.And gnats, and hornets, and wasps; I don’t like them either!.I am not crazy about flying, stinging and biting bugs!

I can attest to that, you will surely know when you get bitten. They don’t call them horseflies for nothing.

As soon as he saw the horsefly, Calvin darted into the house, darted up the stairs, darted back outside, and darted over to Mom.

Yes he darted with his dart gun, as young heroes do. But he is still learning that no good deed goes unpunished.
And bad deeds? Foil Rosalyn darts upstairs to deliver message.

There are buffalo gnats in parts of arkansas. Hurts and my ring finger was so swollen I had to go to the dr. Was afraid I might have my ring cut off.

Just a thought.
