Rather interesting seeing as it is a Japanese cartoonist using the famous Iwo Jima flag raising as his backdrop. Sakai…that’s a famous surname, or pseudonym, with regards Iwo Jima, isn’t it? I wonder if there’s a further connection.

Spoke to a man yesterday whose doctor daughter has been there, working with Japanese aid workers, and many others. Interestingly- she said the best hospital set-up came from—Cuba! We don’t see that mentioned in our press.

There is a LOT of credit to be passed to MANY COUNTRIES in this effort, we should possibly cap our own national ego.

Do you think Sakai is praising the US efforts or is it a critcism?

Gladius: I just googled it too. The name I had in mind was actually from the Eastwood movie (I watched it for the 1st time within the last month or so on TV here). However, the character’s surname coincidentally (?) is the same with the POW you mention. I think the movie confused my memory (that’s Hollywood for you ;-) ) but still it IS a famous surname with Iwo Jima connotations. Perhaps the surname Sakai is the Smith or Jones of Japan (I thought Watanabe was). Oddly enough, for “Sakai cartoonist”, I get many hits for Stan Sakai, a Japanese born American cartoonist but not the Sakai from Kagoshima. Also, Iwo Jima is of another Japanese prefecture, not to be confused with Iōjima within Kagoshimi. My apologies, I know very little about Japan so found it interesting googling stuff about this ‘toon.
