    That was worth a giggle. Since our definitions of scents came mostly from the French (with all the imported stuff), Eau de Toilet was simply translated that way and was the least potent (and expensive) of each product.

    I still sometimes wonder what anyone seeing the bath products on my shelves would think, as the French term for shower also has a different meaning in English. As I like to bathe with liquid products, I usually place the writing towards the wall.

    It was a German textbook I used in high school that said that toilet water is cologne. I learned the German name for the city (Koln) before finding it translated as Cologne. In a French class the year before, we learned that “toilette” meant “outfit”.
