In May 1940, while the Germans were overrunning France, Premier Paul Reynaud came down with the flu. For the next three days, his mistress, Helene de Portes, actually called the shots, telling generals and ministers what to do!After the the war, the French investigated all the reasons for the debacle, and hanged the traitors. Madame de Portes was not even investigated; they didn’t consider her presence any problem.

British King Edward VII was, as well as an intelligent, able monarch, a charmer. Throughout his life, he enjoyed the “company” of many lovely ladies. It was known, but discreet, and none of anyone else’s business. As he was dying in 1909, his wife, Queen Alexandra, sent for Mrs Keppel, Edward’s mistress at that time, so that she could say goodbye to him personally, even leaving the room to allow her some privacy.

Most other nations consider such indiscetions not too big a deal, as long as it doesn’t interfere with governance. We Americans inflate them up to national scandals, for the pupose of political leverage.

Just looked him up in Wikipedia. WOW! He outdid any US Pol. They probably threw in the sex scandels for good measure. He seems to have done everything else imagineable!
