@chizzelMy 2nd day in RVN, less than 24 after my arrival, I saw 3 Phantoms about 3 miles away attacking with snakes and napes. It was quite a sight with their steep dives and steep climbs, different than when I had seen them train in the states. One day a couple Phantoms buzzed our mess hall at low level during noon for the sole purpose of scaring the bejesus out of us. It worked, although the pilots may have been celebrating the secondary explosions as the result of their bombing.

I loved when they would come over slow. They have a roar that I’ll never forget. The A-4’s were great, too. As soon as they got off the ground, they would go into an almost vertical climb. Hit those afterburners.

Sadly, he is quite sincere.

Had a neat photo of an F-4 giving us close air support, he’d dropped a full rack of napalm that landed where it was supposed to, behind our position. An ARVN pilot in a A-1 wouldn’t come within miles because they had a 20mm they were using, a Marine heard the calls we were making and came in: “old smokey”, yep F-4’s were good aircraft.(and we were glad to see them)

I was 10 when the Paris Peace Treaty was signed (literally, on my 10th birthday) so, I will ask this of the Vietnam Vets who post here:How good were the South Vietnamese armed forces? By that I mean, their bravery, professionalism and the ability to execute battle plans.

If only there were some conservatives left. Sadly, most have morphed into RWNJs and the rest have become “libruls”. The former have no interest in reasoned discourse and post as trolls.
