The kid’s going to push the car out of the garage? Definitely the 80s (when they made them lighter to save gas).

My daughter at age 5 sat in the drivers seat and pulled the car out of park. (‘66 Dodge) It rolled down the driveway, across the street and into the neighbors bushes. She jumped out of the car, ran into the house right up to me and said "Dad’s gonna kill me. Hide me!" The kid was in a true panic! We checked and discovered why!Started the car up and pulled it back into the driveway!

I’ve remembered Calvin’s last line since it was first published. It works that way in the adult world too.

How can Calvin push the car without changing the gears in the car. You need the key to unlock the gears unless the car is on a sheet of ice. Also a 50 pound kid can’t push a 2000 pound car. Oh wait this is the comics.

Calvin is acting more like a real kid in this sequence than usual. Instead of the mini-philosopher, spouting words and concepts someone twice his age wouldn’t know, he’s showing the profound lack of foresight that gets impulsive kids in trouble all the time.

When I was about 15, I tried to roll the car out so I could wash it. (If you didn’t have a key, you could still jimmy the ignition switch enough get it out of park, and with a little push, it moved.) Down the driveway and it rear-ended a tree. My mom chewed me out, as expected, but there was no real harm other than a dented bumper and a dented tree.

But a year or two later, she tried to do the same thing, with the same result. It hit the same tree, and put a second dent in the bumper.

So when these strips came out a few years later, we could both laugh about it.

When I was about 5 or 6, around 1967, my mother left me, my younger brother and baby sister in the car while she ran into a store. It was parked in a diagonal stall, with an uphill incline. I remember having a great time playing with the steering wheel, until I pulled down on the gear handle, taking it out of park. It rolled back into the street but luckily didn’t hit anything. I can’t believe my mother left three young children alone in a car like that. I guess it was no big deal at the time.

My sons were always amazed at how my wife and I would catch onto things they were into. What they didn’t know at the time is that we were once kids ourselves and did things they hadn’t even thought of yet.

And yes, my wife did grow an extra pair of eyes in the back of her head shortly after giving birth.

It’s difficult to wait until tomorrow and the next few days for what I already know will happen. Calvin and Hobbes is virtually the first thing I do every morning.

It isn’t so much that she screeches, it’s that she says “No” pretty much every time Calvin asks for something (of course, that could have to do with the fact that Calvin always asks for things that he shouldn’t ever have). Calvin’s logic here is that it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, since he’d never get permission even if he did ask.
