    I remember hearing that you can kill a tree just by carving a ring under the bark, all the way around. Cuts the leaves off from the roots, and vice versa. :(

    I enjoyed this kindly approach to tree preservation. We had a real tragedy here in Central Florida, where one of the oldest and largest specimen trees of Bald Cypress (called “the Senator”, because it had been donated to our County by a US Senator) was destroyed by a crack addict who was hiding in the tree and set a fire so she could smoke her pipe.-Fortunately for us, the tree had a number of clones that had been developed from it, and a new one has been planted. But it will take hundreds of years to grow that large again.-That said, I thought Arbor Day was the last Friday in April(?)
