Rosa’s initiative is admirable, but I still think the guys should carry the girls, especially if the field is really as short as ReallyBad calculates. I would have suggested the girls take their heels off, but maybe the field would be too rough on their feet (if need be, they might have removed hose as well, to be put back on at the restaurant’s Ladies’ room). And yet I can’t shake the premonition that this cross-field venture will not go as smoothly as the kids would like….

Also it’s a field not a cow pasture I think they’ll be ok but considering all the comments Greg have been making maybe not.

As soon as I read Rosa’s response to the situation, I thought Rosa is just right for Americorps. ~ http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps~If there are stickers in that field, those gowns will be ruined. If the field is muddy, there are going to be some lost shoes or broken heels. If there is a bull in that field, there will be some running, lost shoes and injured body parts. If there are any bovines, there will be some meadow mushrooms to step into. ~No matter what, Rosa will handle it like its no big deal. Luann on the other hand will not be happy at all.

“…200 feet. That is all they’re walking, and we’ve spent days on the drama of walking 200 feet across a field.”^While you present some technical points, you forget that Greg is not himself a “technicrat”… I don’t mean “technorat”, I mean “technocrat”. He doesn’t draw for the purpose of accuracy, but only to get his story out there, Or else, the fact that it’s "Highway 33’, and the fact that they’re going to “Elm Street” would be that significant. He’s only interested in setting up for story’s sake, not for “fine point details”. – Besides that, read the comments (in particular the thoughts of the ladies). Pay attention to what they’ve been saying. 200 feet or 2,000, you’re talking about ladies having to risk ruining their dresses and shoes, and possibly have to negotiate hidden rocks (among other things). If they were in sneakers and jeans, I’m sure that it wouldn’t present an issue. But again, it doesn’t matter the distance, it’s what can happen in either that short or that long a distance in wear that’s more made for showing , and less for going .

On one occasion, A guy took a mattress on the bus, and somehow managed to get it off. Also, with all of the….. “underdressing” (read: pants hanging down, underwear showing [ both from male and female} and other things, I think a dress would “balance out” the two “extremes”.

I think it has to do with the fact that we all tend to use words in a more relative way, where it wouldn’t technically count as what the dictionary says. A lot of people use “petite” to only mean “not as tall”, just like people use “big” to mean “really, really tall”, even though “big” technically would refer to things other than just height…

Some walk like it’s a “Sunday drive”, some walk like it’s the “Indy 500 (I, for one)”. Having lived/worked in both the city and the county, and having had both a short and long walk to the bus stop, I can tell you that you don’t want to stroll when it comes to the bus… simply because sometimes the driver’s watch doesn’t always agree with yours….

"^So…you’re going to make a person carry a pedometer? Or to have an accurate tape measure whenever they walk? Lots of people call something a mile, and it’s not “technically accurate”. Even city and country miles are different. A mile can be estimated , and still be off…… you’d have to actually measure to confirm the distance. Most people speak in terms of relativity ……

“Mapping devices give distances.”^True… but only Gunther would think in terms of technical distances. Quill is trying his hardest to not have the girls to give it any thought… for the good of the group…. telling someone how far something is, is very different from covering that distance. Ask any kid on a trip. Ask any hungry or thirsty person, or a “demoralized” (read: "disappointed, getting discouraged) person expecting to do something within a time frame, or any person that has to go to the bathroom! – “…or else I, the reader, have no idea how far they’re going. All I have to go on is a map that shows a very small distance. If the reader needs to have an intimate knowledge of the author to correctly understand the drama taking place, then that is flawed writing/illustrating.”^You’re trying to fit “lawyer logic (read: debates about the letter of the law, usually just to win their case, not always for the good of society)” into artists’ creation …..a rendering of imagination …. -

I learned a long time ago, always go to such an event in your regular walking shoes or sneakers, and then change to the dress shoes once you get there (and vice versa). This, because my dress shoes (doubling as my “interview shoes”) were, for the longest time, the tightest ill fitting things it was ever a displeasure to wear… :-( Thankfully, I have a better pair or Rockports now. :-)

But I do like Rosa’s initiative here, picking up on Gunth’s suggestion. And, we see Q wearing Gunth’s plaid cummerbund. :-)

“That is why passengers boarding Bus #1 tell the driver immediately that they need to transfer to Bus #2 at some point in the trip. Driver #1 then gets on his radio and informs Driver #2 that he has a passenger or passengers for him, and Driver #2 will wait at a designated point.”^You would think this would be a solution, but alas, the transit company that serves the area that I live in has around 100 lines. In the larger metro areas like this one, there are some practical reasons why they can’t always wait. To have the one driver wait, would mess up the schedules for all the other bus lines, as every driver would have to do this, like a “domino effect”. But if the buses both meet at, say, a certain intersection where they both meet, the one driver -will beep and try to get the other driver’s attention,, as people rush to get across the street to the other line. But apart from radioing in to the division they run out of, drivers don’t radio each other. Too many lines to have anything but a general radio from central, or their division administrators. Not to mention the “hands free policy”, coinciding with the state law against handhelds while driving. And that’s because our lines have some of the oldest bus models, usually last years’ models (with the radio phones) or even older ones still in the fleet. – Some lines run very frequently, like every 5 minutes apart, and some lines run every 20, 30, or 40 minutes, and some even longer than that. It all depends on the annual “passenger counts” conducted every so often, which leads to them planning and changing route frequency up or down (depending on the volume found on each route), while some routes may be combined, altered or eliminated. – So everyone knows how to negotiate their travel, in order to make sure they can get to where they’re going, and planning their trips to make sure they’re “covered”…. once you ride in this system for a while, you know what it means when they say “rush hour”, or “hustle and bustle”…. -

“My mom was about in the 5’4” range. Is that next size up from petite ?From my copy and posted definition above, I construe it to mean of very slender waist/slight build. Hadn’t considered height as some tall women are very slender. Might even be referred to as ‘stick figures’."

I’m 5’5" and can wear some petite size clothing, buy usually don’t. That’s what I mean by petite, being short. A tall, slender woman would be considered just that, tall and slender, not petite, small, dainty, diminutive, slight, little, tiny, elfin, delicate, or small-boned. All these words from your definition refer to height.
