I hear some people complain about these mascots, but I haven’t heard and would like to know the opinions of the majority of native Americans. If they do feel that these mascots denigrate ridicule their culture, then the teams should get new names.
Oh, for Pete’s sake. “Redskin” is and always was an insulting term — describing someone by their skin alone, rather than the people they identified with. You can always find people to argue both sides. But my understanding is that most Native Americans do NOT like this name. And for that matter, if there is even a significant minority, I’d listen to it when the solution is so simple. The owner has been particularly obnoxious in his insistence on it. There’s nothing magical or sacred about the name; lots of teams have changed theirs over the years. Why not this one?
By narrowing down our view of those cultures to mascots, it is part of our own history that we are insulting. I don’t know about the US, but in rural parts of Canada, the line between “white” and “native” is pretty thin in some places.
Think for an instant of the fortune we spend to go visit places like the pyramids, the Great Wall of China or medieval european castles. We’re passionated with the old stuff of other cultures! We should be able to relate to our own past, our own first cultures as much as other people do.
