Sophie: “Just do your business where I don’t have to watch it. You humans are gross. And don’t even get me started on the stench. Whoa, a shiny!”

I finally broke down and bought a 25 ft retractable leash for my dog. I sit on the bench in the dog area of our complex and wait for her to run around like a nut. Once I see she’s done her thing, we clean up and head back in.

You ain’t kidding! The temp here hovered near 0°F all weekend and I just happened to be dog-sitting a friends pooch. She was exactly like Sophie. I spent nearly an hour out in that bitter cold every time I took her out. She had to sniff every tree. My legs had windburn.

I don’t go for a walk with my dog Penny. Instead she leads me on a lingering stroll from one place to sniff to another. I see that I am not alone in this. She is the first dog that I have had that has to sniff every spot.

Sadie’s hard to get out the door, but once out has to check the whole yard, and maybe do some cleaning, regardless of conditions. Angel is out the door immediately (and is ready if you even approach it), but if it’s cold does her business quickly and is back in. Einstein I have to carry, and in cold weather close the gate on him to keep him out long enough – and he’s like as not to just stay there whimpering.

My friend’s two boys will make things very quick in foul weather. But will then wake her in the middle of the night for extra trips. .Anyone just sit back and watch the dogs when their humans are cleaning up the droppings? Some dogs give their humans such a strange look. As if to say “Why are you doing that?”
