She got it right. It is a tug of war to see if Ukraine will join the EU (which is what most Ukrainians want). Or be the First Nation to be forced back into the “New Soviet Union.”

it turns out that the ukraine is split pretty close to 50-50, russians to the south and east, west europeans to the north and west, so whichever side is in power, the other is left out. the north and west just have a more active way of expressing themselves.

What are you talking about? That’s actually a fairly good representation of the situation.

What do you suppose would have happened here if the Occupy protester had gotten violent? Probably much worse than what has happened in the Ukraine.

This may be the most accurate, and least “Limbaugh” I’ve ever seen from Lisa. Yes, the classic Russian bear is appropriate as is I assume, Merkel. They say this morning there may be a settlement, let’s hope so. After all as many have died in the protests as would be killed in 3-4 days of gun violence in the U.S..

I applaud you, Ms. Benson. One of the best ‘toons I’ve seen from you. Easy to understand, captures the point accurately and simply. Thanks.

    >>"Ukraine is liberaled.">Liberaled is not a word. Did you mean liberated? The meaning of her neologism is clear though. “Liberated” would have communicated something entirely different.

Interesting how the EU is characterized by Angel Merkel who has more in common with Lisa than the rest of EU. So what exactly is the position of Lisa?

I don’t think it is a tug-of-war between powers. It’s a push-of-war between fellow citizens within the Ukraine: between those living in the East vs. those in the West of the Ukraine (ok, SE vs. NW). Initially I wasn’t sure of the exact demographics, although I’ve always been vaguely aware there was a western vs. eastern sphere of influence within the Ukraine (Orange revolution etc). Since November last however, the split has been high-lighted on numerous occasions.

So, while the EU would like the Ukraine within its sphere and is very receptive to the idea of it joining the EU (which apparently our fellow poster pcolli dreads), Putin’s Russia is actively wooing it away with a mixture of financial incentives and blackmail.
