Joadtom: That reminds me of Phylis Shaftly during the ERA campaign. She said equal rights for women would require them to leave their children, go to work, and use unisex toilets. To campaign against this amendment, she left her children and flew all over the country on airliners with unisex toilets.

Previous to this, Michael Sam and hundreds of other gay professional athletes have had to lie about a major aspect of their social lives.

Being gay or straight isn’t just about what happens in the bedroom.

Straight people spend a large amount of their social time with their partner (boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse), or they spend time looking to meet a partner. When they are not with their partner (or looking for one), they also spend time talk about their partner.

This is a big part of a person’s social life that Michael Sam wasn’t able to participate in. He had to actively hide the fact that he had different interests; he had to actively hide any relationship that he had.

Now he can show up to a party or event with a date, and actually introduce that person as his boyfriend. He doesn’t have to hide who he is.

    That is a big deal.

No tears required..Unless you are sad that your viewpoint (which used to be a majority opinion) has shifted to a minority opinion… and is continuing to shrink.

Joadtom: Either you can’t read or you are too young to remember the ERA battle. I was pointing out her hypocrisy, not defending her opposition. I lost a few newspaper columns because I pointed this out at the time – in print.
