Luann is so right: It is important, simply to participate in and learn from a major formal social event. Being in in a relationship or not should be secondary. You ought to mix in the company of the party any way. Feed poor families another day; they’ll still be there.

I agree with Lassie1 above. How is “feed a needy family” a REPLACEMENT activity for prom? Don’t most families eat by 8? And when is prom? 8-midnight? 6 to midnight? Maybe they would have to forgo an entire afternoon of preparation, but it doesn’t take that long to get ready if you don’t want it to. Getting my hair fixed at a salon was not something I was willing to pay for in high school.-If Delta doesn’t want to go, then don’t go. It’s the holier-than-thou, condenscending attitude that rankles me. If you want to be nice, offer to babysit on New Year’s Eve. I found a lot of parents wanted to go out but had a harder time finding sitters because the teens wanted to celebrate, too.-I remember my prom from 15 years ago. It wasn’t even great, but I’m glad I went because I never went to dances.

Is it Bernice or some guy she doesn’t know calling? If it is a guy, the conversation might go like this: “Hi, Delta. Guess who this is?” “I don’t know.” “Guess.” “Mom makes me hang up if you don’t identify yourself right away.” “Why?” At that point, Moms grabs the phone and hangs up, and 40 + years later Delta will still wonder who that guy was. ~Guys, please let the girl know who you are right away when you call her.

It is Bernice calling to tell Delta what she really wants to do on prom night. Delta cannot think of herself as a good person when she is this oblivious to what her friends want. Delta is really pretty selfish. Only her values and goals matter in the world.

-dragged through the mud -I don’t see Delta being dragged through the mud at all. What I see is a lack of communication between two old friends, Delta and Bernice. -Delta has been involved in good works for a long time now. Although she went over the top in describing the costs of the prom as a ‘millstone’ and saying that she’d rather give the money to charity, it is no slur on her character to have her presented as someone who envisions a good deed as being more important than a dance is.-It is unfortunate that she explains her desire to do good to Luann as being partly the result of not having a relationship, but that still doesn’t look like Delta is being slammed. It just looks like she’s no better at communicating than anyone else is.

And the same could be said if it were to be someone else… to me, the timing is prominent, but not definitive in pointing towards one or the other, in considering just that one thing, alone…. it’s all in the individual interpretation. – That’s why I mentioned “think about it”. If we’re sure that “it is what it is”, then all well and good, and we are making ourselves more sure that it is right, and we still sharpen our “thinkers” in the process… But there are times when there’s a curve ball thrown in there, too…. either way, it’s exercise….. – Officially, I think it’s either/or… but I don’t think either would be wrong as far as a guess is concerned…

What’s with all the hate on Delta? A lot of posters are saying that today’s strip reveals that the reason Delta wants to do a good deed on prom night is because she’s “insecure” and somehow she wants to feel better about herself. I don’t think that’s it at all.-Delta starts off by NOT condoning Luann for wanting to go to the dance. She recognizes that Luann has a boyfriend, and is generally boy crazy, so going to prom is “pretty darn important” to her. Delta seems confident and happy that Lu will have a good time, and these are a characteristic of a good friend.-Also, when Delta says she and Bern are “relationship free”, she’s not saying that she’s going to feed a needy family because she has no one to go prom with and would rather be seen as a saint or a loser. She’s saying that at this point in her life she’s not in a relationship and so other priorities, are more important to her.-I think she’s saying that if she had a date, she would go. She would have fun, dress up, dance (as we’ve seen in past strips, we know she likes to do), and have a good time. But she’s “relationship-free”. That’s not her life at the moment, and she’ll have more fun giving and getting to know a new family than spending lots of money over a experience, that she personally will not get a lot out of.-Maybe if this wasn’t Delta, I might be more dubious about motives, and such, but this is her personality. She likes helping people, is almost always volunteering, starting initiatives and getting involved. It’s what she likes to do.-And for everyone who’s saying that she can feed a needy family any other day of the year, obviously she KNOWS that. She’s wants to do something special on Prom Night, and instead of spending a bunch of time on something that’s not important to her, she wants substitute the time and do something else that is.

Another thing is, people are saying that Delta coerced Bernice into helping her with feeding a family.-Looking back, at Bernice and Delta’s prom conversation from last week, there is a noticeable difference between how she responds to Bernice, than how she responds to Luann.-Luann is boy crazy, she has Quill, so prom is obviously going to be a special memory for her. And Delta reassures her, exactly that.- Bernice, as seen last week, was border-line complaining about how she doesn’t have a significant other kind of person in her life, and so Delta challenged her to think differently. Really, the world is not going to end, if you don’t go to prom. Unless it’s THAT important to you. It’s a matter of perspective.- Delta gave Bern an alternative because the latter was clearly unhappy with the idea of “falling behind” and not having a boyfriend to take her to prom. I don’t think she was belittling Bernice’s desires to buy a dress and have fun, or coercing her to do whatever she said. She thought of an alternative that she thought would make them both happy. -If she was belittling, she would be trying to convince LuAnn right now, that going to prom is a bad thing. All Delta says though is going to prom isn’t HER thing.

What is kind of weird about Bernice and Delta’s attitude, is the notion that you need a date to have fun at prom. Prom is about having fun with your friends and celebrating high school memories. If I was LuAnn, I would be more upset with the notion of spending prom without my friends. Quill is nice, but he’s only a fraction of her friend group.

For others, no, their lives have gone in other directions… Its funny, I still remember my sister’s senior prom (I didn’t go to mine for various reasons). “Mrs.” Phelps" is really "Miss’ Phelps…which makes this arc all the more poignant… ;)

Bernice is scared that she’ll turn out like Ms. Phelps and have to chaperone the prom in 30 years – having never gone to her own. Too bad they didn’t get Johnny Weir & Tara Lipinski for chaperones. Guess they were too busy critiquing fashion at the Academy Awards.

That’s why I like Ms. (short for both Miss and Mrs.)…. Keeps folks’ noses out your business (somewhat), and still fits to a tee….

Bernice and Delta should go together – as friends. That’s what the girls who don’t have or want dates do here. They go and have fun. Or just go as a big gang of girls and guys together.
