What’s he doing with a prize marrow at this time of year?

In the US there seem to be prizes for the largest pumpkin. Some of these weigh hundreds, if not more than a thousand, pounds. I’m not sure they’re edible either. None of this makes sense for a wintery February.
Is a marrow = a zucchini?
Ironically, zucchini is Italian for “little cucumber”.
