And this is why I’ll never live in a retirement home!

One wonders just what Ma’s children plan to do about her welfare. Perish the thought that one of them might be the least bit inconvenienced. Perhaps even have to cut back to only three boxes of HoHo’s a day.

I thought Ma lived in a retirement home, where they all eat in a lovely dining hall.Mmm… something meat-like in gravy, with instant mashed potatoes and canned peas.

On “Italian Fridays” they mix in a can of tomato soup and serve it on cut up spaghetti instead.

The “Chinese platter” is really special…. they add canned pineapple tidbits, and pour it over rice.

Who’d want to go out, and miss all that?

And all kidding aside…. I’d rather eat there with Ma than take my chances with the Penny’s bottomless freezer.

At least the gravy there was probably made sometime after 2008.

I think Burl’s reference to “they will always have carryout for you building” is remarkably rude, thank goodness they don’t have the undertakers phone number on the to do board or a post it stuck in the phone. .I suspect by the look Ma knows exactly what he is smiling about. Joy and Verl are clueless.

Meals on wheels is delivered by volunteers… In our town it’s run by Catholic Charities. No one owns it..I’m not sure what BURL’s point is… Unless he is reassuring Ma that the Paramedics will always be carrying people out of her building and delivering them to the hospital or morgue… ! ! !

It’s a good way to assess people (by the way they treat their parents and other elders). My new friend has his mother living nearby (recently into a retirement home) and he goes to play cards with her and younger sister every Friday evening (and sings in her church’s choir every Sunday) spending much of that day with her as well.

If my brother had been more like that, our mother would probably still be around also. My children are good and generous to me (and each other).

GymShoe is right; Burl is speaking of the paramedics, butHe’s just being snide (not reassuring) because he doesn’t care about Ma.

My Mom moved from old homestead to senior apartment a few years before she died. At both living areas, I stopped by on my way to work and had a morning coffee with her. That way, I knew she was up and around, and she had some company at least that one time per day.

@Pipe, my brother was a lawyer, so dad made him executor AND gave him power of attorney over mom (who had never balanced a check book). After Dad passed, he sold their condo (offering me 1/2 the proceeds) I objected and tried to prevent the sale, but I had a full time engineering job and he worked when he chose (mostly cheating others.

I tried to convince mom to let one of my grown sons do her POA (as I barely manage my own money and they both graduated with honors and could have helped). I did what I could to influence choice of a really nice nursing home (one near me had a fab. pool and she liked swimming even with use of just one arm and leg) Pool entered with ramp or even with overhead crane. Instead he chose a cheap one near his house (and seldom visited-per the nurses). I chose this house with an eye to accommodating her but by the time I managed to move she was not able to fly and he did not leave her in hospital long enough to get attention to recover (needed to be watched while eating).

I hope to help my new friend in entertaining his mother, but realize it is soon for him to introduce me. Have to take things gradually, but I’m very lucky to have found someone as compatible (was thinking just today how many DVDs he has recorded or bought of same things that I have) and he has done many things that I’ve wanted to- love that he has camping stuff and is willing to attend SCA events with me.

And I understand your resentment; my brother has now passed (even though almost 4 years younger than I) and my new friend just turned 70 (so I’m a cougar) LOL!

He sings in her church choir and spends time with her on Sundays and plays cards with her and her younger sister on Fridays. He’s active in the local theater group and square dance club (so my next project is to take lessons in that) while keeping up with my SCA. I remade one of my own pieces for him to wear to a recent event and will make some more.

Dazz…. Thank you. I figured there was something I was just not understanding. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I have worked hard over the last several years since my beautiful Mother passed away to be forgiving about my siblings. It has been a bunch of hills and valleys however, sometimes I am forgiving and seemingly able to let the emotions of it go, but then unfortunately it rears back into my mind and the resentments resurface. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I wish I knew better how to let things that were painful in my life go, much more successfully than I do. I think it would be good for my own quality of life. Yet, I am not very successful at it.
