Boy have times changed. Leave a kid in a car now, and you’re up on charges.

Something I’ve always wandered, in the second to last panel, I wonder if that’s one of those instances where Watterson didn’t have enough space to draw the planes the way he wanted to, hence the really awkward angles they’re going towards each other at. I guess he also had to fit Calvin in there somehow. I can only imagine how different that would’ve looked after the new Sunday format.

Nowadays, if you leave your kid in the car, you might get arrested. Jeeez.

Typical of mankind. Six years old and already showing a love for the unexpected and and gruesome. He’s not interested in the “mundane”, like car wrecks, though . A crash between two planes in mid-air are much more spectacular !

this time around, calvin’s imagination is reflected in his toys and not in real life. I thought it was going to be a car crash.

Calvin wants his mom to return so that they can takeoff. That’s the plane truth.(Sorry………… Hope nobody got ill…………)

Not always. Aspen does all its traffic opposite direction. But they try to do it one airplane at time.

Calvin, the airline pilot, does not bother with air traffic control’s instructions about which way to take off.

If it’s hot outside, you better believe you’ll get in trouble for leaving a kid in a car!

These days his mom would be charged for leaving Calvin in the car: for cruelty to kidnappers.

You can tell how old this is. If it happened today, Calvin’s mom would be in jail for child abuse.

I see all the comments on how Calvin’s Mom would be jailed for leaving him in a car and am struck by the thought “Are we better or worse off today?”

At the age of 7, my parents would put me alone on a train bound for Philadelphia (about an hour & 20 minute ride) and the conductor would sort of look out for me each time he passed by collecting tickets until we got in to the station where my Great Aunt would meet me and I would spend time with her. At the end of my visit, the reverse scenario would occur.

Today, if I survived the molesters and other weirdos, my parents would surely be up on charges as well. However, I never had an issue, always had fun, and always returned in the same condition I left home (except for some extra cake & ice cream, of course).

So, again I ask, as a society, are we better off today or not ??

@CyberSpaceDrifter: As a society, we are both better-off and worse-off today.

Calvin’s finally doing something that isn’t mischievous or results in trouble. I’m surprised.

The fourth panel for some reason reminded me of the old comedy spoof “Airplane.”
