I am going to say the same thing, 40 years with out using it. As for the Grand Children, that’s why I worked so hard so their parents could go to school and teach their kids.
I flunked algebra too, and don’t think I needed it either. Never took any higher math either, I get by on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and I learned all of those by 4th grade.
This is just silly. I’m an artist, and I use algebra all the time. I use it to find a height when I’m given a width and a ratio. I use it to enhance compositions. Heck, I use it to figure out how much I should charge! I’d be pretty much lost without algebra; and I’m guessing a lot of other people would be too.
If I had my way, schools would be teaching logic and statistics along with algebra, history, geography, science, reading comprehension, composition, and the rest of the “core” competencies. It would make us, as citizens, a lot harder to manipulate!
If you have a recipe that feeds four and you have six people eating, so you multiply the ingredients by one-and-a-half, you’ve just used algebra. If you’re figuring out your car’s gas mileage, you’re using algebra. If you calculate how much paint you need to cover a room of whatever size your room is, you do it with algebra.
Those are just a few examples off the top of my head.
I’ve gone 50 years without needing it, and actuallythe movie about a kid taking over the Minnesota twins called “Little Big League” taught me more in one minutethan a whole year of Algebra: first time I ever understood it.Way to go Treggie, I’m with you
I use algebra on a regular basis, along with geometry and trigonometry. A lot depends on what profession you go into, but I also use them a lot in my hobbies. And yes, Mai, algebra does come in very handy for comparing prices and quantities, especially with grocery stores use different measurements for their “standardized” labeling that’s supposed to make it easier to determine which is the better deal.

Algebra and Trigonometry are the two most useful mathematics I have used.
