“could care less about first, but now others can’t that do.”-FIRSTFRISTFORSTFROSTcouldn’t-And with that out of the way, understand Gunther doesn’t want to unduly influence those about whom he cares to do something they might regret.Rosa’s desire for passion is understandable and will be slaked by someone but methinks Gunther doesn’t want to harm the long haul for the short term benefits. There are responsibilities he isn’t ready to shoulder, others would just ignore them and enjoy the passion. For that matter, I would, but I’m a bad person.

Moony U must be more than a Community College if it offers a PhD program in an engineering discipline.

The community college is the place where LuAnn wants to go, while Mooney would be the local university that offers up to doctorates. It would be a Title II university like a state university. The real issue is that Rosa had told Gunther before she was probably going to to Yale, and he now is willing to follow her. So would he follow her to the Peace Corps? If he did they might even have to be married to get the same posting.

Note that Gunther doesn’t plan only on attending Moony Uni (across town) for his B.S. degree but also for his Ph.D., instead of going to a different university for grad school After that, he plans to become an engineer – in Pitt, of course. He can’t imagine going anywhere more than 10 miles away from Mom’s house. These 2 people have absolutely nothing in common other than their both being good students. Drop him like a hot potato, Rosa.

Rosa may not be Gunther’s type. Which is o.k. Doesn’t make either person wrong, or bad. They just might not be a “fit” forthe other person. Gunther is the way he is, to a degree. He will grow, as he enters college, and his horizons will expand. But he will basically be the way he is. The trick is to find someone who will take him just as he is, and love and appreciate him without trying to constantly “change” him. Gunther is good; he’s not a freak because he is decent and moral. In a society of loose morals and careless living, Gunther is a breath of fresh air. Thank God for men like this. Mine was very much the same way when we met. He is the most Godly. kind gentle man I know. But strong, and unyielding in character and morals. I thank God for good men. They are rare in this world today.

Gunther’s reaction time is a little slow, but he is in fact adaptable. He’s just processing the idea of perhaps going to Yale instead of Municipal U. Rosa needs to continue to rev him up, but gently and patiently. She won’t regret the effort, even if her passions are temporarily frustrated….

Well, Rosa, at least you have Gunther starting to think. Now, with a few more strategic questions in the right direction, you just might get him on that plane to Ecuador.

Perhaps you might consider a very discreet chat with Gunther’s mom. Or get Quill to help with that since he already has an “in” with her. Between the three of you, it should be possible to convince Gunth that he needs to leave the nest and “get out there and explore.”

    Explore several different things. :-PPP

GREAT, G-man! For you, thinking of moving to Connecticut is a major adventure— away from Mom, away from the library you love. (FYI, I had to google Yale to see what state it’s it—http://www.yale.edu/.)*Rosa is good for you. Last year, you would never have dreamed of moving out of Pitts. Connecticut, Ecuador— what’s the diff?

Have we previously seen Gunther show any interest in engineering or is this choice just because that’s what stereotypically nerds are expected to do? Or perhaps because it’s a “practical” degree, rather than theatre or fashion design?

Except for the Kennedy’s and Cuomo’s, whose kids get into IVY’s via the back door, IVY League colleges choose the student, not the other way around. For Rosa to be presumptuous about admission to Yale is ridiculous, regardless of what her parents want for her. Check out Yale’s admit rate! My son was lucky to get into Brown!

“If Gunther gets a degree in engineering, there will never be a day in his life where he is unemployed.”*Levi – perhaps, but I have a family member who got a degree in engineering at a respected university about 40 years ago, and he’s been selling insurance ever since.*Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but a college major does not sentence a person to one career for life.

BTW- insurance has provided very well for his family and it fits his personality better than engineering.

Rosa should accept Gunther the way he is and not try to change him. He will be a great engineer in Pitts living with his mom. He would never be happy in the PC in South America. Rosa must get tons of attention from more suitable males. Surely she can find a nice, smart man with passion.

Peace Corps is not for eternity, it is about a 27 month commitment. BUTI see it coming—Gunther and Luann will be going to school together and may still hook up, in another 20 years or so. And adventurous Quill, who knows where his next adventure may be.

Rosa sees who Gunther is and likes him. Gunther hasn’t yet focused on who he is. Therefore he cannot understand peoples responses to him, yet. Part of this is his lack of a role model. Would’ve helped him to have had a “Big Brother”.

For Gunther, going for the Ivy league rather than the local college is about as adventurous as he’ll get. I’m pretty sure Rosa is thinking about something much more rebellious (he won’t work out unless she settles down).

Gunther should not go to Yale for engineering degree. Yale is NOT a big engineering school.

Don’t get me wrong. There isn’t anything wrong with Yale’s engineering program, but Gunther would be spending an exorbitant amount of money for a fairly run-of-the-mill engineering program. Moony U would likely provide him with just as good of an engineering education as anything Yale would offer him — maybe even better — and it would be for a whole lot less money.

If he really wants to spend Ivy League kinds of cash on his degree, MIT, Cornell and Princeton are three possibilities. They are well known and highly respected for their engineering programs. Yale — meh. It would be a terrible waste of money.
