This is reminiscent of the album covers of “American Stars ‘N’ Bars” by Neil Young, and “Dare To Be Stupid”, by Weird Al Yankovic, whose cover was an homage to Mr. Young’s cover….

Nice subtle Veteran’s Day references there in the second panel.

OONA! For years I had that image of the comic book with the giant’s feet in the cellar closet… I just recently made the Nancy/Oona connection. Love it!

I have to admit that when I decided to add all the “classic” strips to my favorites list a couple weeks ago, I didn’t have the highest expectations for this one. I remember reading Nancy as a kid in the 60’s and 70’s but it was never all that interesting back then.

As it has turned out, this newer version of Nancy has been excellent. I don’t recall there ever being story arcs when Ernie Bushmiller was drawing it and Guy is far more creative and uses colors much more effectively. Kudos!

    And thank you, veterans.

Is Gilchrist going to take a vacation and we’re going to see some of the old Nancy strips with the Oona character?

When the comic strip first started, Ernie did stories all the time. It was the style of the day. After the early fifties, Ernie went to a mostly gag-a-day format, as that, too, became the style of the day. I enjoy both formats. I will continue to do both from time to time. The conventional wisdom of the last two decades was to not have too many story lines, as readers may not have bought the paper a particular day, and so won’t understand what’s going on.The internet affords our readers, both traditional newspaper and online, the ability to go back weeks and weeks and catch up with the storyline these days, so, as I enjoy the occasional story, you get both!

Thank you, Guy. You are doing a great job. This strip brings back memories. I still remember the six cents between Nancy and Sluggo on 6-6-66.

Actually, it looks more like a mash-up of two classic TV shows: “Submitted for your approval: Two American children are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages during the first opening of America’s weirdest experiment, The Memory Closet. Nancy Ritz and Oona Goosepimple now tumble helplessly toward some new adventure somewhere… in The Twilight Zone.”

That was the Nancy strip on June 6, 1966 that I recalled.
