Dawg has a point there. If a player got his bell rung every time he stuck his noggin into a play, he wouldn’t be so inclined to lead with his head.Either that, or put everybody in hamster balls.

The operative words here are battering rams. It is true that what was designed to to a piece of protective equipment has become a destructive weapon. This can be changed by enforcing the rules but the culture that breeds this type of behavior will still, unfortunately, prevail.

Helmets ain’t the answer. Concussions come the rapid/sudden ‘DECELERATION’ of the brain inside the skull. Not from the impact to the head. When a player goes from 20mph to 0 in a millisecond his brain continues going forward until stopped by the skull. Sometimes resulting in bruising, bleeding or tearing. Concussion.

It’s simple. Enforce the rules that are already in place.

could be the solution, get rid of all pads. Linemen end up with more broken bones, but you would have less concussions.

My high school in the late ‘50s was one of the last local teams to get rid of leather for plastic – and the players hated it. The leather was comfortable to wear, it didn’t echo, and the entire structure was flexible and padded – no rock hard surfaces. The only downside was that the helmets had to spend off season in the storage facility at a local furrier.
