Soccer is just as dangerous to kids, not so much with head injuries, but there are other injuries. Other sports such as Gymnastics and wrestling can also be dangerous.Even cheerleading can result in injuries, some have resulted in paralyzing a girl for life.
I suppose you could ask Sonny Bono how dangerous skiing is……..no, never mind. I wonder if there were a steroid whose side effects prevented concussions, would it be legal? Would it be mandatory?
Also baseball. Joe Mauer, AL MVP in 2009, 3 time AL batting champ (only catcher to do so), caught his last game for the Twins, August 19, when a foul tip hit his mask, giving him a concussion, the effects of which didn’t show up until the next game, but kept him off the field for the rest of the season. In high school, he was both a catcher and a quarterback — was, nationally, the top rated high school player in both football and baseball as a senior, and had had concussions from those playing days as well.Earlier, even though he caught fewer games than Mauer, Ryan Doumit had missed a couple weeks, following a foul-tip-caused concussion; more than a handful of other MLB catchers missed games because of foul-tip-caused concussions (pitchers are just throwing harder).In July, 2010, Justin Morneau, AL MVP in 2006, while sliding into 2nd, trying to break-up a double play, was struck in the head by the shortstop’s knee. He had batted .345 with 18 HR and 56 RBI in the first 81 games. He missed the rest of 2010, most of 2011, and, though he played in 2012 and 2013, hasn’t been nearly the same hitter since. Though a first baseman as a professional, he was drafted as a catcher, and was an amateur hockey goalie in Canada before signing with the Twins, also with a history of concussions. There is talk that Mauer will (reluctantly on his part) finish the rest of his career as a first baseman.
Guess what? Life is hazardous, and you really can’t remove risk. How far are you willing to go? Those who build your houses face many risks from falling to job related injuries. How many people are suffering brain injuries from car wrecks? Emergency personnel are expected to lay their lives on the line on a daily basis. Where do you draw the line?
There is some talk now of eliminating the catcher-crashing in baseball – I think that is a good idea. If the catcher blocks the plate before he has the ball, it is interference, just as it would be at second base.
Nobody is saying it, but the runner ought to be out for attempting to dislodge a ball held by the fielder/catcher. Good evasive slide should still be legal.
