    Let’s see what the situation is tomorrow.

    If water plumbing is the same in the UK as the USA, there should be a shut-off valve under the sink or at least at the house inlet. But if it’s a drain that’s backing up, there’s no shut-off. And what comes out the drain, well, it’s a major problem!

    I often get the feeling when we’re dithering around with something and the dogs are watching in great interest that there should be a thought balloon over their heads saying, “Why on earth don’t they just [insert solution]?” It can be very disconcerting.

    When we had our house built in 1978/79, the plumber didn’t put shut-off valves under the sink. We didn’t know that until a repair had to be made several years later. My husband put shut-off valves on all the pipes whenever he replaced a sink. If we buy another house, I’ll be sure to look for shut-off valves.
