I’d never heard of that. Thanks to Google, I know there’s a chicken and waffle place only about 50 minutes from me: Maxine’s. Careful — it probably autoplays “Welcome to Maxine’s Chicken and Waffles” automatically when you go there (My computer’s set up to never autoplay stuff).NPR has a story about the dish online that aired earlier this year: Fried Chicken And Waffles: The Dish The South Denied As Its Own?. There’s a link in that story back to another story and the reaction to it that got this one run/posted.
Gladys Knight (yes, THAT Gladys Knight) has a restaurant in Atlanta that is famous for its chicken and waffles. They’re wonderful at 3:00 AM after a night on the town.
I grew up in New England and in my half a century of living had never heard of chicken and waffles before. Guess I hadn’t really lived. Only became aware of it when I recently watched the Mildred Pierce mini series with Kate Winslett. It’s set in Pasadena, CA during the Depression and her character establishes a restaurant serving chicken as the main course with waffles.
