We already have many sensible gun laws, in some states and places. We also have some excessively strict gun laws, in some states and places. We also have some excessively lax gun laws, in some states and places. Unfortunately, this is where our odd balance of federal and state and local authority does not serve us well. Regulating weapons in one place while leaving things wide open in another, transportation being what it is, is like the old joke about restaurants: "Having a ‘no smoking’ SECTION in a restaurant is like having a ‘no pissing’ section in a swimming pool. On the other hand, rules that make sense in an urban community of five million riddled with gang violence and drugs, appear absurd in a rural community of five thousand where there hasn’t been a murder in a decade, and vice versa.

Guns are banned in DC. More laws would not have changed a thing. The only people who had weapons are the security guards, with ARs and pistols.

I was going to suggest painting with the blood of the politicians, litle by little until they become dimwitted, dull and lifeless, but it’s too late for that.

What is sad here is the death of democracy. A small group of officials and organizations can completely thwart the will of the majority (and a reasonable will) to the detriment of all.

I have no problem with hunting, target or sport shooting. Or even having a gun for defense, if you can prove the necessity. But guns are just too lethal too quickly to allow such unfettered access all the time any time.

So, Omnius, your gratiutious ad hominen attacks aside, what exactly does "…sensible gun control… consist of? Exactly how many guns can a “moron” own? Who will be deciding that number?

Dear rwnj’s: nobody’s trying to take your stupid guns. Wake up! Do you really, really believe that you guys could muster together some kind of armed rebellion that could compete with the armed forces of the U. S.? There is actually a huge difference between requiring meaningful background checks for gun purchases and confiscating your precious weapons. I know you won’t agree, but it had to be said. You may now proceed to your predictable rants.

I particularly like Tom’s little comment in the corner… “Apparently, we’ll have to dig a little deeper.” I suspect that Progressives like Tom are figuring about 6 feet deep should do it.

“People have known about the deadly effects of tobacco and alcohol for decades and decades and they cheerfully ignore that, so it’s not like we can count on common sense.”-SOME people have known for decades and decades. Mostly they were non-smokers and tobacco company executives.-Those tobacco execs lied to Congress and the American people for all those decades and inundated ‘people’ with advertising that was a lie.-The NRA has gone the more direct route and kept legislatures from any gun control by a combination of bribes and threats.-And, it was largely Republicans/Southern states who fought both. In the name of ‘freedom’, of course.

That was a sweeping generalization as far as the “…shiny object…” comment goes. It was meant to symbolize that the Progressive Left tends to only look at the moment. It is gun control this week, and something else next week with gun control forgotten for the moment. That is the Left operates on crises and a “do something” mentality without really thinking the problem through. Thus, the second part of the comment.

I also think that the intellectual shallowness of the Left (in general) is due largely to a liberal arts-like educational background. Deep considered thinking is not a hallmark of the Progressive Left if history is any set of sign posts.

Same song, 30-gazillionth verse. So the criminals who are killing people will obey the new laws even though they don’t obey the old laws. Oh, I see that logic. . . . said no one ever.

So why pass any laws ever, since criminals will disobey/flout the law anyway?

There are over seventy (70) federal government agencies which are stockpiling ammunition…this does not include the US Military…WHY?This theory has been thoroughly debunked. The government signed some big, long term contracts for ammo supplies. They aren’t hoarding or stockpiling, they use huge amounts for training. Given that some private citizens are stockpiling, the decision to lock in low prices looks pretty smart. Ammo prices have been skyrocketing.

LOADED, UNCASED , weapons were once banned by regulations in National Parks. (They could be brought through the parks if out of reach and unloaded.) Coburn changed that by legislating a regulation to allow loaded weapons to be carried and available. Last weekend a three-year-old girl was killed by a handgun in a National Park: quite an accomplishment, DOCTOR Coburn!!
