I’m curious—is Luann calling and calling and calling, wanting to know how everything’s going, have they heard from the Qster, etc., etc., etc.? Wonder if she’s going to wind up spending any time over at the Bergers, expressly to see Quill…and how the G-man would take it? Not only would Q have stolen his unrequited love, but Luann would be encroaching on G’s time with his new roomie (rather like how Luann tried to horn in on Bern’s face time with her newly revealed brother Ben). How much of a mess is this going to be?

Maybe Frank will consider Quill much less of a “threat” once he learns of the Quill-and-Gunther roommates arrangement.

Poor Gunther is going to wonder where Quill is much of the time. Maybe he’ll get a break – maybe Quill & Luann will double date Gunther & Rosa. Like to get some chemistry going – then drift off and let Gunther & Rosa heat up.

Or maybe one of the three (Luann/Gunther/Quill) will feel that the other two are “crowding” them out. May most likely be Luann or Gunther feeling this way. If Gunther and Quill become good friends, Lu will wonder why she’s not getting Quill’s attention… or if it’s Gunther, then his hopes and plans of having a guy to learn from and bond with will meet with an obstacle… or maybe Quill will be so busy for either of them… – Then again, Maybe Greg will just have Quill staying here, just for the purpose of convenience, and only use this for a couple of gags…

Gunther and his Mom are so alike in appearance and character; and having lived for a long time as just the two of them, her tunnel-vision for her only son is clearly rather stifling (though not ill-intended). Quill should have a salutary effect on the Berger household by serving as a de facto father image….

I don’t think Gunther is gay so much as it appears he lacks a man to guide him as he has grown up. (evidence the lack of his father. Has this ever been explained?) I think his mother has simply mothered him to death what we see is the result. Maybe Quill will become the man in Gunther’s life he needs.

I was hoping I’d feel a bit better about today’s strip and, for a brief time, I did. But I think Gunth’s mom may know or sense something about him that she’s trying to get him to accept “openly.” Still, he resists “openly.” It’s OK when he’s alone with her, but not when others are around.

I concur with Mordy also. He seems way too excited to have Quill staying there, even for a “bromance.” Maybe this is all misdirection on the part of Greg/Karen (via Gunth) to keep us guessing… and debating, Maybe all Gunth wants is an “older brother” type to show him the ropes and help him in his quest for Lu…. er… uh… “Rosa…” that’s the ticket! ;-) But if Gunth is, actually, secretly, “in the closet,” he needs to come out and live openly. Forget what others may say. To be “outed” at point in time where one is not in control of the “message” could be a far worse scenario than coming out cleanly and being in control of the situation.

The first time I remember seeing Gunther’s mother, she was calling him ‘Gunny’, which is very similar to a slang term used in the military for ‘gunnery sergeant’. It would be great if she could be shown using that term again, instead of ‘Gunthie’.

I’m guessing at how long this arc will last, but I will wait till late next week to return to this comic. The comic doesn’t bother me, but it’s hard for me not to read the postings. And so many of them today show a level of blatant bias that leaves a rotten feeling behind. You know who you are, and if you’re proud of yourself, think again. Or maybe think for the first time….

Given Gunther’s past history of unrequited love for Luann, I can’t see Luann and Quill doing anything private at Gunth’s house—can you imagine Q asking G to let Q have the room a while so Q and L can make out?—and we already know Frank’s going to be watching them like a hawk at the DeGroot home. So what’s a couple to do? I see this as a way for them to pretty much be apart, even though Q’s going to be in the same town.

I DIDN’T “Start It”, Wesley. YOU Did.

Alright, let’s hit the “Pause” button here for a second and get something STRAIGHT (No Pun Intended).

I DON’T Have ANY Problem with ANY Character in the VAST Luanniverse being Gay.I DO Have a PROBLEM with Characters in the Vast Luanniverse Being WIMPS!!!

    Biiiiiiiiig Difference.

Ever Notice? Only the Wimpiest, Most PASSIVE Guys in THIS Strip have to deal with Bullies,

WIMPS Attract FISTS. WIMPS Attract Exploitation. Exhibit “A” Brad being Pounded by Dirk and Pushed around by Ann Eiffel. Exhibit “B” Gunther being Bullied by Leslie Knox.

I’d also include Frank on this list because of His TERMINAL Passivity. Five will get You Ten, that Frank is probably Pushed around by His Boss at work. And Nancy? Don’t even get Me Started.

WIMPS Rely on OTHERS to “Rescue” them. In Brad’s Case it was the Cops and Old Smiley. And in Gunther’s Case it was OX.

And what Happens the day the “Rescuers” AREN’T Around?

You can BET You’ll NEVER See Quill getting Bullied. And WHY? Because He’s “Too Cute”??? PLEASE.

WIMPS: They are PATHETIC, and NOT Funny, Greg Evans.

You’ve TAKEN Gunther’s Glasses. NOW, Give Him a BACKBONE!

AND Once Again I Say: NO STRAIGHT Guy, or GAY Guy for THAT Matter, would EVER get THAT “Excited” if some Guy came to Live with Him.ESPECIALLY If THAT Guy STOLE the Other Guy’s Girl or Guy.

You Got THAT Wesley and ESPECIALLY YOU, Joel??

    GOOD! Resume Program.

I think that’s the whole goal when Greg picked Gunther for Quill to stay with – to man Gunther up. He is a wimp. Quill is gentle enough to guide him and a lot more intellectual than Knute who has not been much of a help for Gunther. Gunther was raised by a single mother who apparently mothered him a little too much and became effeminate.

Growing up, I was called “Titi” (don’t ask) as a nickname. No one in my family calls me that anymore, except an aunt who was still using it as of recently. At that point, I told her not to call me that anymore and to call me by my real name. Sounds cold, but I HATE “Titi.” That’s for little girls and I’m NOT a little girl anymore.

Two thoughts:*1) Quill is going to absolutely LOVE Gunther’s mom.*2) The G-man, and I guess many of us as teens, really doesn’t worry about his mom giving a bad impression. He’s projecting on to her his fear that HE will see “square” to Quill.

The one good thing about it, Greg can do some work and “expand the house” knock out a wall and make an addition, and maybe not charge the Bergers anything for it…. or maybe just “retrofit” it so that the dimensions were just enough to not crowd anyone out… - We have some “Craftsman” style homes around that have an open second floor with the main bedroom on the first level, and maybe the bathroom on the first or second floors, and the space upstairs is more like an “open attic”, but makes for a nice sized bedroom…. if theirs is like that, then maybe Gunther had the upstairs and his mom took the downstairs, and the den was his sewing room…

MAn do all of you people live in the bible-belt? Seems a lot of people see gay everywhere. ^^I never said Gunther is gay; I know he isn’t, fact is, he and I are very alike, but, my point was that I agreed with Mordock in his statement that a straight man wouldn’t likely act this way, under these circumstances, unlike women, men simply do not bond that way.

Okay, my take on this: First, Gunther not only is not gay, he has said that he is quiet sure (due to “physical” responses when seeing girls) that he is sure he is not. However, he seems to be the product of an absent father and a loving but retiring mother who has never exposed her son to adult males, let alone their “normal” ways of expressing themselves. (With gestures or words) He has copied the only adult available—Mom. With unusual interests, and Knute as his only close friend, it’s hardly unusual that he sometimes seems a little “off.” Quill respects his abilities, and Gunther is “excited” because he hopes to learn normal behavior patterns, and be more a part of teenage life.
