That would work if the remote control used an audio signal instead of rf signal.

Ok so OnStar uses satellite to know where you are, and cellular network (proprietary) to connect with OnStar. My guess is they send a “hidden text message” to the car’s onboard computer, and that unlocks the door. (Similar to the text your cellphone provider sends after you’ve listened to your voice mail – you should never see the text message, but, it arrives, tells your phone “remove the icon”, and then auto deletes itself.)

Why not have the keyless remote entry pad on a separate keyring, along withj an extra key for the criminally inept?

With my 2013 Hyundai, I can lock, unlock, & start it with my cell phone. Similar to OnStar, but called Hyundai BluLink. It also allows my GPS to be programmed for a trip, hundreds of miles away, by a person with a computer that has my password.

Eh Brutus, given your car’s age and condition (reference 09/08 strip, http://www.gocomics.com/the-born-loser/2013/09/08#.Ukj34hBShIo), does it even have keyless-entry?

I can’t say this enough: Get a magnetic “Hide a Key”.
