When I went back into public school my mom packed my lunch in a brown paper bag, but she mortified me by putting the sandwiches into the waxed bags from inside cereal boxes.
My brother was a “rod buster”(sets up the re-bar for concrete) on the construction of a nuclear power plant. He carried his lunch in a Partridge Family lunch box.

My mother gave us our lunches in paper bags (after the metal ones). She wanted us to bring them back to be reused.

I got to move up to brown bags when I went from grade school to high school (grades 8-12). But had to try to make that bag last a week.
