Must be some sort of delayed-action trap. You’ll notice he had to turn around after picking up the apple in order for the trap to catch his toes as shown. Since the trap clearly passed over his head, all he had to to to get the apple cleanly was stand still after he picked it up.

The moral of the story is: build a better man-trap and the world will beat a path to your dinosaur.
