When it became obvious that the law was coming that there was going to be no smoking in all high schools including the teachers’ lounge, I quit cold turkey at the stroke of midnight 1980. Best thing I ever did.
My father used to smoke 2 packs of Chesterfields a day. Then he had a heart attack and died, right in front of me (well, actually on the other side of the dining room table). Maybe that’s why I never started.
IT helped me to quit when I realized that the state of MI collects a bounty on each pack of smokes, took all of the Big Tobacco’s “settlement” money, and then passed laws affecting where and when I could use the product. PLUS, as a smoker, my health care should come out of the settlement money.
I quit when I was stationed in Hawaii… they wanted (in the late 90s) $7 for a pack… I decided I was too cheap to keep buying so I quit. Used McDonald’s straws to help cut the habit- I was more hooked on the action vs the nicotine.

Nothing sadder than teachers going out to their cars to smoke, on their breaks….

several months of not being able to use her ‘smoking’ hand probably had something to do with it.

@ncalifgirl58It must have been a 70’s thing! We had outdoor smoking areas in our local high schools in St. Louis.
