    @Holly

    Plan A: Dive into the water and swim far-far-away out of sight or at to the other side of the lake.

    Plan B: Keep blurting out random wrong answers all day long.

    Plan C: Sing out loud like a Banshee and sing very badly while you’re at it.

    Plan D: Do ALL the above.

    Wow. Well shame on Gram for trying to make sure Holly is prepared to do well in school. This is America! A C-average is perfectly acceptable. As long as she’s having fun. Besides, how’re you gonna get her married off later if she’s too smart?

    I say ‘YEAH, EVIE ! ! !’ She is just trying to ‘look out’ for her granddaughter and help her survive school, so she can survive ‘LIFE’ ! I wish I would have had a Grandma like Evie that did things like she does rather than the parents I had that ‘brow-beat’ and ‘berated’ me through school, telling me of my ‘shortcomings’ all the time.

    If Holly’s in middle school, shouldn’t she already know her times tables?! Good for Gram!

    All work and no play makes Holly a dull girl. I applaud grandma for wanting to help. But I believe there is a time to play and a time to “work” and I think Holly need a break to go play!

    Holly is 13? She should have started learning the multiplication table when she was Alix’s age!

    Alas too many bright youngsters (mostly female) have been taught from an early age that math is hard and unnecessary.

    I believe many of them go on to become elementary school teachers.

    Gramma should point out that Holly will need math to manage her money—if she ever has any!

    Evie, you would get better results if you said “9 trips to the lake times meeting 7 new boys each time equals how many new friends on Facebook?”

    Some kids do better naturally. I had my kids so close together that my older 2 had better grades all their lives, while by the time I decided I had reached my limit, I had little time and attention for each. I decided on divorce already around 1968 (I remember while dancing Anniversary waltz) but waited until I could work while they were all in school (and a particularly bad incident of his violence).

    My grand kids vary also (each of my children have only had 2) and in general one sibling does well in just about all subjects while the other not. My youngest granddaughter is determined to become a star (very active in singing and theater arts) but also gets straight As. She was just 17 this year.
