A friend lived in Hawaii for a number of years. I sent this strip to her and asked if she remembered Hawaii. Then I said I didn’t think she had any Kliban Cats as neighbors
Though those look like ribs on the banana leaf, the dancing cat facing out is smoking. You have to remember that his strips started back in the 60’s and continued until his death in 1990. If you see a self portrait of his when he was younger he usually has a cigarette in his mouth. Different times.
This definitely looks like a backyard get-together instead of a tourist luau. Lay you odds those cans were supposed to be beer too :).
