A large part of the problem with this economy is NOT the government but the CORPORATE greed that is failing to allow workers a decent wage and benefits. Large stores like JCP have almost all P/T worker with only store managers and supervisors being full time with decent benefits. A.C Moore the same way. Companies have found it easy to keep people trapped as P/T with no benefits.
I have two masters and consider myself lucky to have a 40 hr /wk job with no benefits and $11/hr. Health Ins just went from $875 to $945 a MONTH with no health issues. No vacation, no nothing.
We didn’t do today’s panel in order to get our readers fighting among themselves. I think Sportymonk was trying to point up the irony of his situation, not boast. It may be that russell5419’s son is one of the lucky ones. Too many grads are having trouble finding the work they’re qualified for. The labor unions were created to level the playing field and free workers from corporate exploitation, but it seems as if the employers have found loopholes to get the ball back in their court.
Before this runs away any further, did anyone think that “masters” meant, y’know.. “bosses”? Two JOBS and only making the equivalent of $11/hr, part time.
Where I work half our team is temps making about 1/3 of what full time employees make. Corporate policy is that we can’t have a temp doing the same job as a full time employee for more than 18 months without hiring them. We still manage to have “temps” that have worked for several years and are still considered temps. Management figured out how to fudge the policy by having them work different hours.
I know I don’t want to be immortal. I don’t want to see this planet turn to anarchy within 100 years. And it will if something isn’t done. The ‘common good’ no longer exists. How sad.

July 5th was my 13th year at my current employer. I also worked 13 years at my previous employer. At my previous job I had earned 120 hours of vacation time that I could take any time, any way I wanted. This was in a place where our work weeks were 3 days on, 3 off, 4 days on and 4 days off. So essentially half the year (26 weeks) was 48 hours and half was 36 (12 hour work day). And ALL holidays were honored. Current position used to be unlimited overtime but when the owner passed, that passed too. Everybody had to work the 4th and a 40 hour “vacation check” won’t pay anything so I gave up on those and without enough overtime pay I had to almost drop my 401(k) contribution!
I don’t believe in a utopian society. As TSR stated, those who believe that utopian society is feasible fail to recognize and understand true human nature. We as a race just aren’t built to be completely selfless. For Utopia to succeed, all parties must act in the best interest of others. ALL parties, not just some.
