Bigotry is alive and well, just look at folks chiming in on the “immigration issue”, remember the “S” word folks? It’s being used all the time by right-wingers in the “discussion”. The reaction to what the lady said several decades ago does seem a bit extreme.
I find it hard to imagine anyone that age from the South who hadn’t once used that word. If it did coincide with a bank robbery as she stated I can well see it. My mother used the word in reference to anyone who acted badly and the colour of their skin had no part of her meaning.I don’t think I’ve ever used it but since I’ve been around almost as long as Ms Deen and talked every day since I learned to, I can’t guarantee it. Oh yeah, I’ve spent all my time north of the Mason-Dixon.
There were certainly a few of us who criticized the Hilary Clinton supporters who started that, but I note (with a certain hilarity) that the original demand back in 2008 was the first and potentially only time that the far-right wing flocked to ally themselves with Clinton supporters as soon as the issue hit the press.
It can’t be ignored that it is the far-right who have kept this non-issue going.
And yes, Democrats used to be the party of racists. Decades ago when school integration was being pushed, though, the Republicans cleverly marketed themselves as being in favor of states’ rights – to be able to refuse integration. That was when the racists jumped ship and went Republican.
I guess you didn’t read the part where I said “some of us certainly criticized the Hilary Clinton supporters who said that.” But I’m not surprised you ignore the bit which doesn’t fit your story…
For the record: it’s stupid, no matter who says it, and that Hilary Clinton supporters were saying it and she didn’t step right up and squash that stupidity was one of the things that turned me off supporting her in 2008.
1) The “use of the N-word” admission was part of a recorded deposition, in response to a lawsuit which has been brought by employees alleging frequent (and recent) sexist and racist harassment. I could not answer as to where her lawyer was, but she did have a right to a lawyer’s advice at that point, and if she’d had the brains that God gave little teeny tiny hamsters she would have taken it….but having said that, she was also under an injunction to tell the truth, and I guess she did.
2) Apparently, according to what the media have reported of this deposition, she admitted to using the “n-word” a heck of a lot more recently than decades ago, as she admitted using it to refer to Obama.
“Most of us, at one time or another, have used the “N” word,”
- Speak for yourself, John.
“black rappers use it in most of their songs. So what’s the big deal?”
- Because people who are IN a group can use terms for themselves and each other which are offensive when people who are NOT IN that group use them. That’s the way it works; people in a group are included in the term, people outside the group are imposing the term, and there are real differences in power there. Understand?

As long as people recoil in horror, it will continue to plague society. Indifference will make it go away.

It’s still OK to say and tattoo your face with, “Kill Whitey” though? Just ask the New Black Panties.

Is that clear enough for you?
