Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for June 24, 2013

Happy to see this back. My two granddaughters, eleven and thirteen, epitomize the “text generation.” I love them very much. But, I think they are going to have a hard time when they get to the real world. Having said that, I look around and see a much more casual workplace than when I was fresh out in the world. Perhaps, their ways will precede them and be waiting for them. I hope I live long enough to marvel and grouse at their work world.

Apparently Dad doesn’t. He can’t get his butt off the chair and put the paper down long enough to look for his own daughter.

That’s one excuse for being fat that I can’t use .Both my friends know I hate and do not use any kind of social media, and wouldn’t if you paid me.( anything less than7 figures.)

We who spend time commenting on the comics should be careful about how we criticize the twittering class. An old saw about glass houses and stones certainly comes to mind. ;)

Twitiots can walk fine. It’s the avoiding cars while walking and tweeting on busy downtown streets that’s the problem.

I think people who follow tweets have adopted an attitude of " We’re interested in what you do, as long as, we don’t have to do anything about it. !"

ROFLMAO!! Isn’t that the truth? Twitter-Heads are too afraid of leaving service range, much less able to walk fifty yards after spending so long at their computers their legs atrophy. But on a more serious note that’s far truer than this satire would have us believe. Not unlike cases of people dying of deprivation from playing MMOs nonstop for days on end. Oh well, Darwinism adapted (hah!) to the cyber age.

Oh they can cover 50 yards. Even cross the freeway without getting hit. Even drive. Their worst nightmare………Having nothing to say or “tweet”.

It is interesting how often today “city folk” depending on their cell coverage get lost, or break down, out in the boondocks, and die, because they aren’t smart enough to realize they’re going out beyond the reach of “civilization” to come to their rescue. Not quite “Darwin Award” time, but often very close.

I knew a guy whose whole universe was computers and the Internet, but he was quite witty about it. He told us that not only did he not need utility heating in the winter due to all the running computers and devices in his apartment, but he actually had to open the window as well! When he was advised to go outside and enjoy the summer, he said he was allergic to sunlight. When he complained of constantly running out of disk space, I suggested deleting some stuff. He said “I am unfamiliar with this concept of ‘delete’.”

50 yards … Isn’t that about 140 steps?

Didn’t our parents have similar things to say about us?

If, and I emphasize IF, Twitter survives (as noted, some of its users do not), it might be interesting to see how our communications overall are affected by its 140-character limit.
