I’m glad somebody else remembers the outrage against the scope of the original Patriot Act, and how it was supported at Fox News. Now the same groups (and Senators and Representatives who promoted it) are acting all shocked about the same exact things that were started back in 2001.

^I would add, however, that the only people on the right who publicly denounced the Patriot Act at the time were the Libertarians. The mainstream GOP and quite a few Dems, however, were all for it. Anybody who supported Bush for “keeping us safe” has no reason to criticize Obama for doing THE EXACT SAME THING.

I grew concerned about Orwell, actually, back in 1984 when seeing what Meese and Reagan folks were up to! Scary times were underway back then!

Orwell know what he was doing, but it was set to be a warning. This is what will happen if the GOP cheats it’s way into the White House.

I certainly agree he was prescient, and I could only roll my eyes when I saw the Oregonian on NYD 1984. The Oregonian pronounced us not on Orwell’s path. I thought it was pretty obvious that we were right down the center of Orwell’s path.

I recently turned a friend on to ‘This Perfect Day’ (Ira Levin).

She thinks that is predictive of our future, absent serious reforms. I think I agree with her.

Why doesn’t the toon look like him? There are plenty of photos. He had a moustache, for one thing.

And no, he didn’t entirely think that he was writing fiction. He had Stalin’s Russia and Hitler’s Germany as models. Only the technology has changed.

Orwell predicted the Fox “News”/ Frank Luntz phenomenon. As far as snooping? It’s bad (like driving while Black, voting while Hispanic, etc) — snooping while Democrat.

Trouble with futuristic and/or science fiction, is that it eventually becomes neither futuristic, nor fiction.

This stuff’s been happening for a long time….why are people just now “outraged” about it?

    Tigger,

If you have seen my other posts around, I do criticize Obama for those things (I believe on one post I claim Obama’s biggest failure was not wiping his ass with the Patriot Act during his inauguration speech). And I am furious it was expanded. So yes, I blame W for promoting it and Obama for continuing it. I am hoping the current outrage will finally push him to remove it. However, I think, like every other President, he will allow the ire to subside until it flares up again under a new President. My primary criticism is against the ordinary citizens who accepted it initially but now feign their outrage because the President is in a different party. I know you to be Libertarian, so I doubt you ever supported the Act, since it is nothing more than a restriction of the freedoms of the American people. If you blame Obama for not repealing it, I assume you blame Bush for creating it.
