My understanding is that gas taxes are use taxes intended to cover wear and tear on infrastructure.It would make more sense to tax the energy that is used to power the car (based on whatever algorithm).
My last V-8 was a ‘54 Oldsmobile (actually had a ’59 Ford, but it was such a dog I got the more reliable Olds!). Like “Master” also have a v-6 RAV 4, and it outperforms every V-8 blunder car, mileage, handling, and acceleration! Plus of course, 4 wd, and living in mountains and snow country, that’s a big plus.
Oregon IS flirting with an idiotic system to tax by the mile instead of gallon, which would require refitting every service station in the nation, and every car, totally stupid! (and another way for that “big government” to track you!) Who WANTS the mileage tax on hybrids, THE OIL COMPANIES! Hybrids are constantly being improved, and some now will even replace the batteries for no fee when they “expire” (there is a limit on life with them, so far.)
I somehow seriously doubt “road kill” deeflatener can get 51 MPG out of his pickup, as my neighbor is getting a consistent 56 mpg out of her “big” toyota, that is the same size as the pure gas version.
BTW, little noted is the fact that Tesla IS selling cars, though granted they’re expensive and limited production, and has PAID OFF it’s government loan for hybrid development, while FORD has NOT!
In Virginia, we just enacted a four-dimensional set of rules to make up for the fact that the gasoline tax, which is specifically used for road projects and repairs, cannot keep up with state transportation needs, and has not for years. One of the new rules is that owners of hybrid vehicles must pay more to register the car every year. The exact opposite of a gas-guzzler tax. Republican Governor, Lt. Governor, Atty. General. Republican House of Delegates. Even split in the Senate. Make of that what you will. Regardless, our new tax law punishes those who will help the environment, and encourages suburban assault vehicles.
Remember, our governor, should he survive the current ethics scandal, is likely to be the Republican nominee for either Pres or VP in 2016. Remember the name: Bob McDonnell.
Generally, a very good post as usual! However, just one small point. The batteries on almost all newer cars are built deliberately to be recycled at the end of their life-cycle use. And this is kind of a win-win situation, as this is not only good for the environment, but is also being done as the materials in such batteries are far too valuable to be just thrown into land fills! It is win-win as it is indeed an example of true capitalism at work, so even the conservatives should be able to support such an effort!!
To my understanding, “Fracking” produces natural gas – not oil…and “the Market”, when we produce oil in the US, sells large parts of it (at higher prices) to foreign markets – negating any reduction in America’s dependence on foreign supplies…PROFIT FIRST !
