In my county, we’re slowly easing towards shorter summers and more breaks throughout the year. The traditionalists whine, but it’s good for everyone. We have had plenty of time for a long trip this summer, my kids will go to camp, and they’ve also sat around at home. Another month of this, and my kids will be happy to go back to school. Plus we have an extra break in Oct and Feb now.

It actually wasn’t a very good example to set. Now when Holly wants to skip school she can tell Val, “Well you did it!”

It’s better to schedule vacation days (so you don’t get in trouble) but MY work was always waiting for me when I returned. Back in Chicago, I’d like to take some days off if the weather got unexpectedly nice (to do tasks around the house AND a little relaxing). Here, the weather is always sunny and predictable.

Traditional long Summer vacation was intended to free up the kids to help on the farm. It wasn’t really vacation. Obviously not many farm kids any more. A lot of school systems are getting away from that and going to shorter breaks spaced through the year.

Georgiii: you stole my thunder.. As an ex-farm kid, (VT) it only seemed reasonable for a 2-month break for kids to ‘tote that barge, lift that bale’ and do some swimmin’ in the crick, but as you say, we’re becoming more and more urbanized these days, so what’s the use? I pity the kids here in FL..School’s out 1st week of May and back to the grind in AUGUST !!

Children don’t learn when it is too hot, just like productivity rose in the South after air conditioning was introduced. Maybe, this doesn’t matter, but this gives the imported schoolmarm time to go home for a visit and also allows for construction and rehab for the school buildings. Doing heavy construction while school is in session would be a nightmare.
