The GOP has moved so far to the right that, in their eyes, ultra-conservatives are now moderates; conservatives are now Liberals and Moderates are now Commies. It’s a ridiculous POV, and the end result is that they have become The Party of Ridiculous.Hey, Moderate Republicans, come and join the Democratic Party! We’d welcome you. We’re not all ultra-Liberals (despite what the far right might say), and you could help create an even bigger Democratic Party tent. Why stay with a party that holds you in contempt?

“Unfortunately there weren’t enough wastebaskets when that garbage Obama(non)-Care was passed. So when again do our insurance premiums go down?”Lest you forget, what you call Obamacare was thought up and championed by Republicans during the Clinton Administration. You hate it now for the sole reason that Obama took up the cause. As for your insurance premiums, if you had actually read the act, you’d know. If your health insurance company spends more than 20% of your insurance premiums on “overhead” costs, they must refund the difference. If you receive your insurance through the company you work for, they will most likely receive said refund and will see the lowered premiums.

AND not on food stamps with 4 kids even though I COULD qualify. So, then WHY would I be a republican if I thought it was ONLY just to make rich people richer? What you said applies to the GOP, even more. we hate to think what will happen to this country if the GOP wins. There would be no taxes on the riches, no help of any kind of it’s biggest segment, those working poor, and the helpless, the kids, the old people, and women. If the GOP succeeds in gerrymandering districts so NO Democrat Can win we will have the most feared type guv’ment, one of “The party” in other words, totalitarian run by authoritarians who think there is only their way. I guess that would make you happy. Or not, since you so enjoy hating things..Sorry, but I can’t just ignore liars with closed minds.

We have to reform the nomination procedures. As long as we keep electing their nominees, we are dead in the water.

We have to do a lot of other things, too, but as long as the candidates are supporting their parties and not their constituents, it looks very bad. Neither of our major parties (nor most of the minor ones) are supporting the well being and success of the country.

Do you honestly expect anyone to believe you when you claim Obama didn’t change the so-called Obamacare in response to Republican demands? Why don’t you tell us what happened to the main part of it: Single-payer? Obama gutted his original plan in response to Republicans…and still received none of their votes for it, even though it now heavily favors the health insurers.

“Obama gutted his plan to please Republicans knowing they wouldn’t vote for it anyway.”He gutted it hoping it would lead to bipartisan support. Unfortunately, thanks to Mitch McConnell’s well-known plan to put defeating Obama ahead of the country’s best interest, even after getting all the changes they wanted, the Republicans were still not allowed to vote for it. Even more unfortunately, Obama didn’t seem to learn from the experience.Your question: “If he knew he wasn’t going to get any Republican votes, and in fact, did not need their votes, why didn’t he go for single payer right up front?” proves my point. If he didn’t think he was going to get any of their votes, then he wouldn’t have removed single-payer.

“you never proved the permafrost had unprecedented thawing”I did, but you proved you’re not able to grasp the concept. Maybe if you watched the show it might get through to you. Simply put, the frozen tissue the scientists obtained contained intact cells, proving it had never been thawed since it first froze 10,000 years ago. That tissue had been buried deep within the permafrost, but is now close enough to the surface for the scientists to reach, because the intervening layers of permafrost have been melted away by global warming. I can’t think how to explain it any more simple for you.“You are holding me to a higher standard of proving things than you hold yourself.”I didn’t ask you to prove anything; I just asked you to explain how all that permafrost was melted, given your claim that it wasn’t due to global warming. Naturally you haven’t answered…because you have no answer.

“As for the permafrost issue, how come the planet hasn’t warmed in 15 years? Carbon emissions are still high, so why didn’t the planet continue to warm?”So why are you limiting the period to “15 years”, Ansonia? Hoping I wouldn’t ask that? I’m guessing you already know the answer, so I’m not going to waste time typing it in, but I will give it to you with this link that explain it…hopefully at a level you can understand:http://www.forbes.com/sites/petergleick/2012/02/05/global-warming-has-stopped-how-to-fool-people-using-cherry-picked-climate-data/The current favorite argument of those who argue that climate changes isn’t happening, or a problem, or worth dealing with, is that global warming has stopped. Therefore (they conclude) scientists must be wrong when they say that climate change is caused by humans, worsening, and ultimately a serious environmental problem that must be addressed by policy makers.

The problem with this argument is that it is false: global warming has not stopped and those who repeat this claim over and over are either lying, ignorant, or exhibiting a blatant disregard for the truth. Here is a tiny sample of the false claims, gleaned from various blogs, comments to my previous Forbes posts, op-eds in the Wall Street Journal, news stories, and statements from pundits who spread climate misinformation:

“The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years.”

“Current pause in global warming”“lack of global warming for well over 10 years now.”“There is no credible (statistically significant) data that says global warming is occurring”“fifteen years of warming, then fifteen of cooling”“The last decades “rate of warming” is flat.”“Forget global warming…no warming in 15 years.”

I could find a hundred more variations, but you get the idea. These statements are scurrilous deceptions and falsehoods. The planet is warming – an observation noted by every climate research institution tracking temperatures, the US National Academy of Sciences (over and over and over), every other national academy of sciences on the planet, and every professional society in the geosciences.

The actual data are easy for anyone to find – they are posted and regularly updated, freely, on public websites around the world. The most consistent, highly respected, and regularly analyzed and updated data on global surface temperatures are available from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Sciences, NOAA’s National Climate Data Center, and the United Kingdom’s Met Office Hadley Center. [Feel free to redo my analysis using any of these – they all independently say the same thing: I’m using the NASA GISS data in my pictures below.]

All of the false claims take advantage of one fundamental truth about the average temperature of our planet: it varies a little, naturally, from year to year. Some years are a bit warmer than average and some are a bit colder than average because of El Niños, La Niñas, cloud variability, volcanic activity, ocean conditions, and just the natural pulsing of our planetary systems. When you filter these out, the human-caused warming signal is clear. But natural variability makes it possible for scurrilous deceivers to do a classic “no-no” in science: to cherry-pick data to support their claims. They pick particular years or groups of years; they pick particular subsets of data. But when you look at all the data, or when you look at long-term trends, the only possible conclusion is that the Earth is warming – precisely the conclusion the scientific community has reached based on observations and fundamental physics. (Follow the link for the rest of the article).

Here’s another article that debunks the “15-year” claim that the pro-pollution people have fooled you with. It will be interesting to see if you keep repeating your myth on other threads now that you’ve been given the truth.http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/03/25/1768601/in-hot-water-global-warming-has-accelerated-in-past-15-years-new-study-of-oceans-confirms/?mobile=ncCompletely contrary to the popular contrarian myth, global warming has accelerated, with more overall global warming in the past 15 years than the prior 15 years. This is because about 90% of overall global warming goes into heating the oceans, and the oceans have been warming dramatically. As suspected, much of the ‘missing heat’ Kevin Trenberth previously talked about has been found in the deep oceans. Consistent with the results of Nuccitelli et al. (2012), this study finds that 30% of the ocean warming over the past decade has occurred in the deeper oceans below 700 meters, which they note is unprecedented over at least the past half century.
