Interesting that Benson ignores all the FOIA denials under the Cheney/Ashcroft/Gonzales regime operating under “W”.
While in NONsensitive areas and issues, FOIA needs to be honored, it’s interesting that Republicans such as Issa, Cruz, and Boehner have no problem demanding that even classified true security issues be revealed, so they can criticize this administration for yes, carrying on exactly what Bush folks did, except this administration does seem to be much more concerned about compliance with the law. The problems of course ARE keyed to the “Patriot Act”, perhaps the worst piece of legislation the Republicans ever pushed through on a “petrified in terror public”.
You are correct that the dems are complicit. Back in those days, especially in times of crisis, even politicians put aside their differences and provided a united front, sometimes (and this is a good example) to a fault. Good thing THOSE days are long gone.
Another good example of what happens when people vote for a bill without reading it first.
Let’s be fair: this bill long ago was written, proofed, re-written, and tweaked to ensure a specific desired fundamental change in the structure of the balance of powers. It was kept for just such an occasion, when a scared stiff populace was too willing to trust its leadership to care what it had to give up. The perpetrators were just waiting for a good emergency to be able to spring it on us. You have to admire their planning. If only we knew who “they” are.
