Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for May 25, 2013
Transcript:
Marigold: You and Dakota seemed to have fun together. Phoebe: Yeah, and it's confusing. We used to be enemies, and then we were frenemies. Now what are we? Marigold: Maturing young ladies with a complex friendship? Phoebe: I was thinking more like "competipanions." Marigold: Not "compantitors?"

Compantitors has a nice ring to it.

compantitors, although I would have to ask Marigold for a magical translation of that last posting, in case it had hidden relevance..

compantitors

Between the two, compantitors is better.
But it really should have been competanions.

What’s wrong with sticking to two words?Friendly competitors.

So I guess you two are friends for now.

Any one of those beats out “frenemies”

So what’s the deal with this strip so commonly being posted so late in the day, if not a day late? I realize you’re a west coaster, so you’re technically several hours behind the east coast artists, but aren’t these strips produced ahead of time? Just curious.

“Competipanions” has a better ring to it than “compantitors” since you don’t stress the second syllable, but I can get behind the conciseness of the latter one.

I find “Compantitors” easier to say.

I do think “competipanions” comes more trippingly off the tongue; it also displays its etymological roots more deftly. And it is actually faster to say, despite being five syllables to four, because “-pant-” is not only a long syllable in itself, but a weight that drags upon all the other syllables until “compantitors” finally emerges as a pair of positively funereal spondees.

Yeah, why are the strips behind sometimes, and it is especially a bummer when the Sunday strips don’t appear. Also, sometimes a strip is skipped. I’ve always blamed it on GoComics. And our favorite strip is not the only one this happens to, sometimes.

For example, this Sunday’s strip (5-26) did not appear in the morning, or at noon, but when I checked at 10 p.m. it was there.
