I’m born/bred Washingtonian and most of my extended family lives in Arizona; last visit was two years ago. I rarely visit them.

My childhood: minimum three times a year to visit the rest of the family in Scranton, PA from upstate NY: Orthodox Christmas Mass, Orthodox Easter Mass (each a week or so behind the Roman Catholic calendar), and school clothes shopping in August (factory outlets and no state sales tax on most items). Order 5 boxes of Old Forge white pizza on a Saturday and put the leftovers in “the icebox” (aka the refrigerator), listen to the Polka Party (3 hours of Sunday midday polka music with a deejay who spoke only Polish, then drive back north with 4 boxes of pizza, still delicious when cold. Occasionally, we had a wedding or christening or funeral to attend in PA, but the clothes shopping, the pizza, and the polka party always figured in there somewhere.

Never had to travel(days) to visit family, everybody lived within an hour of hometown. Plus, Dad was a traveling salesman, didn’t want to drive a long way for vacation so most of time vacationed at a lake less than an hour away from home.

My Mom’s idea of a vacation is to visit a city or country where she knows someone for free room and board!

Our vacations almost always involved tents and trout streams.

We never took a vacation. We lived in northern Michigan, and dad sailed on the Great Lakes freighters. We always seemed to be the destination for friends and relatives from out of state or down below.
