I used to have a “Grin and Bear It” cartoon from the early ‘70s: .A laid-back college student (beard, army jacket, sandals) is in a guidance counselor’s office. The counselor is asking him, “So want do you want to be … besides a ‘renaissance man’?.It used to be English Lit, Psychology, and Political Science were the throw-away degrees, a waste of Daddy’s money. I gather that “poli-sci” is on the upswing now, with politics-as- business the current trend. Everything comes in cycles. .Maybe “geriatric health service worker” is the coming hot field. Elder care centers are popping up all over. It’s like an analogy to natural processes: The litter on the forest floor decays and provides nourishment for the future generations of plants and animals..We Baby Boomers thought we would live a long time, and we are – just not with the panache we imagined. Will we become a social stratum of struldbrugs?.Not exactly a ray of sunshine today, am I?

There were a number of college educated members in the crew of my sub. Whenever they would start bragging about their degrees, I would remind them that they were still in the bilge right next to me.

Why is there so much interest in trashing liberal arts degrees?

Fuzzy Thinker (I): They trash liberal arts degrees for two reasons:P (1) it contains the word liberal, from Latin the for freedom; (2) as I mentioned above, if they blacklist you in one field, you can always go to another, unlike the narrow degrees where those threats have considerably more power. The real freedom of liberal arts is that you know how to learn, and so can thwart the threats to a considerable extent, thus get to spend more time frustrating the blacklist mentality that enslaves us all.
