Actually, it wasn’t “just a questionnaire”.[]For example, the Tea Party branch out of Waco (Texas) was told to:[]1. Turn over a list of everyone who donated to them over a certain period.[]2. Produce a list indicating the topic and guests for every last episode of every last radio show they hosted over the past two years. []The first is a major invasion of privacy, and the latter is a snipe hunt for any organization that wasn’t keeping tabs since day one.

Matt, I’ve never been a fan of the tea party. But doing the wrong thing to a group you don’t like is still doing the wrong thing. If it had happened to both conservative and liberal groups I would shrug and say “meh”. But the IRS came out and said it was wrong. They f’ed up, they know it, there will be an investigation, and I hope responsibility will be taken by the appropriate people.

OK, the IRS screwed up in targeting primarily (so it seems at the present) tea party and similar conservative groups. But we’ve heard virtually nothing about what, if anything, those investigations have discovered about the legitimacy of their claiming tax-exempt status. Was this really a fruitless witchhunt, or did the IRS find that some of these groups were falsely filing for 501©(4) tax-exempt status?

NO PAC should be able to avoid taxes, and the majority of the groups “targeted” WERE and ARE Political Action Committees, NOT, 501C4 organizations.

No group should be targeted because of their political leanings, but that never stopped Nixon, Reagan, GHW, or “W” in their sicking the IRS on folks. BTW, the guy who started this mess was a “W” appointee, not an Obama appointee, but hey, don’t let the facts confuse the issue.

The real outrage is that 501( c)4’s even exist. They only exist thanks to conservatives on the Supreme Court. The First Amendment does not guarantee anonymous speech, only the Freedom to Speak. Citizen’s United all but declares, “One Dollar, One Vote!”
