We in the USA were never “in” either Libya, where all we did was to lend military support by our Navy and Air Force to NATO (an obligation long established). There were no “boots on the ground” in Libya. And we have never done anything one way or the other with Egypt. For all practical purposes we are even out of Iraq. Our presence in Afghanistan is steadily diminishing, and we will have no “boots on the ground” there by 2014, well before the current term of President Obama is up. At that time, if President Obama can resist the ultra conservative call to another war in the Middle East, we will have no presence among the fanatics of the Middle East, except for surveillance personal and satellites. To not be among such fanatical people is a very good thing, at least to me!!
Generally, a very good and true post, for which I thank you! The only minor point that I would make is that those F16’s were not sold to Egypt by the US government, but by capitalistic private aerospace business in return for money.Our capitalistic companies (that have the wealth to influence our government) certainly do not want to keep their noses out of any situation where money can be made! And I agree with you totally, that we in the US should indeed keep our noses out of the Middle East, and at the same time get as many of our people out of that fanatical area of the world as we can!!!

How about if the other countries in the MIddle East tend to their own? One would think that having a terrorist state which has tried to destabilize them would be enough incentive. But no, the US is supposed to spend treasure and blood to yet again police that part of the world?
