A picture on Yahoo last month showed the rooftop where over a million shark fins were being dried out for shark fin soup.California is seeing an increase of squids off of their coast. It seems that sharks are the main predator of squids and overfishing of sharks is permitting more squids to live and the squids are much better at catching fish than sharks are.Pollution and climate change is also effecting fish populations but the main reason I like this cartoon is that it reminds man that we are supposed to take care of this world.^I recognize there are people who would love to be the person to have the last shark fin for their shark fin soup, or the last rhino horn for their ‘home remedies’. There are people who would love to have a button so that when they die they could push it and everyone would die with them. After all, if I’m going to be dead and gone, why should the rest of you “insects” be flying around? ^ Chief Seattle said that “we do not own the land, we simply take care of it for those who follow us.”The first responsibility for every man and woman is to teach our children to love and respect this Earth and each other. For Christians, and most religions, it is one of the first orders God gave us. For atheists, it’s like the line from the song, “and the only thing remaining of your words and your deeds is the love you leave behind you when you’re gone.”Any other attitude is narrow minded, and is definitely not right.^@ Robert Landers – there are individuals in EVERY forum with whom no dialectic exchange can occur. They are so sure they are right and everyone else is wrong that you can not change their mind. However, not everyone who reads comments write comments. For each of us who does write and read, there are several or more who read and think about what they see. Those are the minds to whom you should reach. If those who anger you give you a sounding board from which you can bounce your comment, it can be a good literary device, and effective. Don’t let the trolls get you down, Mr. Landers. Trolls don’t want to make you think, they only want to make you angry.Respectfully,C.

People better start worrying about the ocean instead of global warming. We can’t live without the ocean, mostly global warming just means there is more crop land to feed the world.

You are one of the better people on these boards, so please do not become too negative, and certainly never give up hope. May I suggest reading the book “Abundance” by Peter H. Diamandis, a man far too educated and intelligent to even consider politics. It is an almost total opposite of all of the ultra conservatives (and at least some ultra liberals also) negativity.

I am in actuality neither a conservative nor a liberal, I am what you might call a technocrat (if there would be a name for it) as I believe that technology and not politics will eventually save mankind from its own follies (and politics just gets in the way anyway). But to the ultra conservatives on these sites even someone in the relative middle of the political spectrum is some kind of a socialist or even a communist.

And RT is correct, but it is hard to have these types seemingly multiply here. But I have seen a few relatively moderate people on both sides, and that is very good in itself. Indeed the only thing that I find the more virulent trolls on here are good for (or at) is to stir up trouble and anger. I guess the only way to counter that is to generally ignore it, but sometimes it gets so outrageous that something actually has to be done to counter it, and that (again as RT states) is an almost complete waste of time. And at the age of 70, I no longer feel that I have that luxury. Heck, even just sleeping is more productive an activity than arguing with such people!! Plus I greatly suspect that some of these people are paid by the post (especially as their posts are generally short and very numerous) by certain wealthy money interests.

“When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money.”-This. This. A million times this.

    very well said!

I am one of of those “lazy bums” who live on about $7,000 a year.My trouble is I got a chronic illness, had a car wreck, had a divorce and got old..

When the government takes away the sales tx refund and the low income energy assistance, and also homestead tax, which is available to get, in even HUD housing, It will be like going down to living on $6,000 a year. If they cut food-stamps and some medicare and medicaid I will be hungry and without doctors care. If they end HUD, i will be out on the street. They just LOVE to hate me.If I could, if I ever had the opportunity of having lots of money, I would put most of it into trying to save the earth from being killed off by the greedy.
