minos: Read Madison’s Notes to see what the thinking was just prior to adding the Bill of Rights. It wasn’t to let thugs and loonies go around killing people. It was to “ensure domestic tranquility” and “provide for the common defense” without the use of the systems of tyranny in use in Europe at the time: conscription, mercenaries, and a large standing army. Just implement the first part of the amendment – the part the Nazi Revolutionary Army wants you to forget – the main part of the Constitution defines the “well-regulated” part (Article II, Section 2). It was used by Eisenhower during the Faubus Insurrection.
To those who say we have ‘adequete’ gun control already – you are wrong! Maybe we have enough laws, but if they aren’t enforced then by defination the efforts of gun control are inadequete. It is time to a) develop comprehensive regulations and b) enforce them all and all the time.
Tigger: The second amendment is one sentence. The opening – the one accessories to mass and serial murder always ignore – defines its purpose. It also limits the scope of what constitutes infringement. The second amendment was temporarily abolished in 1862 and 1917, and permanently destroyed in 1940 with conscription. It was totally stomped out in 2002 when a huge standing army was supplemented by an equally huge number of unregulated mercenaries. I have actually read Madison’s Notes (had to get it on interlibrary loan because no one publishes it nowadays). I suggest you try to get a copy to read and stop distorting the words of those who wrote it.

Ooof. Harsh.
Needed to be said, though.
The NRA is a terrorist organization. Repeal the 2nd Amendment.

There IS room between “doing nothing” and “taking away everyone’s guns”. Why do people have such a blind spot on the subject?

We already have adequate gun control. It’s not being enforced.
Before we start screaming for /new/ laws, shouldn’t we enforce the ones we have? Why would we think new laws would be better enforced?
Beware the effect of unintended consequences.

Ten times the number killed in Boston, EVERY DAY in America with gun violence. What IS terrorism, and who sponsors it?

There were enough sniveling little cowards in both parties. I didn’t think my contempt for Congress could get much worse.

Democrats were included in the no vote and Republicans in the yes vote, for those of you in denial.

Senator, is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy that the NRA has arrived with your check?
