We the people demand some gun control legislation! Big deal! We, your duly elected servants are busily planning our re-election strategies! You, the peasantry should be more respectful of your betters.
No- actually the majority of the people want something done to help cure the problem which is NOT the guns it is the group of insane and criminals that have come to possess them. The government shall NOT disarm its people.
Republicans are anti-gun control and anti-mental health. So if you are mentally ill, the Republican response is to give you a gun so you shoot someone (preferably yourself, but they don’t really care as long as it isn’t them.
Twenty years ago I was on a ferry going to Canada to vacation. I stood at the bow, warm sunlight bathing me face, watching the seagulls wheel and cry, just a joyous, joyous moment. The Canadian couple standing next to me (total strangers) turned to me and said: “So, what’s all this aboot the right to bear arms, eh?”Momentarily taken aback, I finally managed to respond: “Really? No ‘Good morning’ or ‘Nice day’ or even a ‘Hello’ — just launch right into it with someone you’ve never met before? First words out of your mouth? Really?” I stalked away, hopefully leaving them embarrassed, but I doubt it.It ruined my entire day. Twenty years later I still remember it. This is how the rest of the world sees America. Not the opportunity. Not the freedom.Just guns.Guns, guns, guns.
And these numbers say a lot about the level of paranoia in the US — which, the last time I checked, was one of the symptoms of mental illness. Isn’t one of the contentions of the NRA that we should keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill? In addition, I think anyone who is sitting there with their arsenal waiting to take on the Feds, ranks right up there with the wackos at Waco and Ruby Ridge (and we all know what happened to them).
“How about enforcing the thousands of gun laws on the books?”Ima, why do you just go from gun thread to gun thread repeating that, when you know darn well that the NRA works tirelessly to prevent the current laws from being enforced?Tell us why the ATF hasn’t had a full-time director in over six years, Ima.
I’ve been told by family members that some of their friends are buying guns legally with background checks, but then holding them and ammunition until the prices get higher to sell for profit. Which of course makes them untraceable.
SceptiCal: this is why your side will lose. Because you have to resort to such horrendous, obvious twisting of facts and propoganda to try to manipulate emotions of the gullible in order to make your case. You have nothing of reason or sanity or truth to offer.
Note that Wayne LaPierre dodged the draft in Vietnam by saying he was too mentally fragile to go around shooting the enemy while in the Army. He would never pass the background checks he is working so hard not to allow to happen.
@David & @Richard S. Russell — Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your civil discussion of this volatile topic. While I agree there is no simplistic solution, I feel the ONE thing we can do is the very thing so many are fighting tooth and nail against and it makes no sense. At the very least, we need to hold people responsible for what happens with any gun they own.
“Because Obama has failed to do his job and appoint one.”Tigger, most of your comments are you lying through your teeth, or displaying frightening ignorance. Which is it this time?
“No!”Tigger, assuming that “No!” was in answer to my question as to whether the bombs used in Boston were “arms”, tell me why not? The term “arms” is used for everything from knives to hand guns to nuclear ballistic missiles. Given that, why do you claim these bombs are not “arms”?
Here, Tigger, just to expose your lying…or your (probably wilfull) ignorance…for all to see:https://www.google.com/search?q=nra+atf+directorhttp://www.businessinsider.com/jon-stewart-nra-atf-gun-control-obama-2013-1http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/12/atf-ill-equipped-enforce-new-gun-lawshttp://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/02/atf-gun-laws-nraGonna reply, Tigger? Or just do your usual…run away and repeat your drivel on another thread, hoping in vain that no one notices?

NRA continues to be one of the biggest embarrassments in America. A national disgrace.

The real trick is going to be pulling off a re-election while having to explain why there is no gun control legislation

SO Everyone who is up for re-election better be careful! Because none of them care about us. They only love money!

Those bombs that were set off in Boston…wouldn’t those be considered “arms” in the Second Amendment sense?
