While it might be a good idea to change all of them to “paired under civil laws” leaving out the word ‘marriage’, this isn’t practical. Add that to the fact that your “joined” is the same as the “civil union” laws that are present in many states and it results in the same inequalities as we used to see in “separate but equal” school systems, bus stations and drinking fountains. Most uni-sex couples just want to be like their friends, relatives and co-workers, for better or worse, in sickness or in health, etc
And the GOP just reaffirmed their support of DOMA and opposition to same-sex marriage in their meeting this week. Who, exactly, are they expecting to come knocking on their doors to improve their electoral chances? Do they think that the upcoming generation of voting-age bigots is really that numerous?

Nonetheless, it allowed for a country of satanists, pagans, and atheists. Perhaps that’s “the Law of Unintended Consequences,” but constitutionally no religion has any more claim to acceptance and equality under the law than any other. (And that goes for “No Religion” as well.)

Marriage belongs to two consenting adults. Atheists can marry and don’t need a church. Let churches bless holy unions, or sacred unions.
